This work portrays the reflections of the composer during his life as an undergraduate. All the elements of student life are featured; walks along the river, the organist lending his fugue a touch of bravura, leading to a reverie with changing meter, even a gentle hint of romance. This tuneful overture is certainly not too serious and allows all the members of the band to enjoy themselves.Bridges Over the River Cam was commissioned by Cambridge Youth Concert Band with the help of Eastern Arts Association. The first performance of this work was given by the Cambridge Youth Concert Band, conducted by the composer, at the Concert Hall of Cambridge University Music School, May 13, 1990.

“Rising into a New Era” was commissioned by the city of Landeck in 2023 to commemorate its 100th anniversary since being declared a city. The composition serves as the introductory part of a trilogy, encapsulating the years from 1923 to 1956, depicting Landeck's transformation from a market town to a city. The outset of the piece is characterized by a reserved and hushed atmosphere, reflecting the initial uncertainty during a period of economic challenges. The optimistic anticipation of a new beginning is only echoed by the sound of the city's new bells. The central motif, threading throughout the entire composition, is derived from the name of the city: LAnDECk (A-D-E-C). This motif unfolds at the onset within the resonance of the city's bells, gradually evolving into the main theme through the gentle tones of the clarinets. Following the initial years of the burgeoning city, where a positive societal shift and newfound security are symbolized by a second musical theme, the sudden eruption of the Second World War disrupts this progress. A mournful melody, borrowed from the cheerful second theme of the piece, speaks of sorrow, nostalgia, yet also solace and hope for peace and freedom. A “Vivace furioso” captures the uncertainties and intense turbulence of the war. These tumultuous emotions gradually settle, culminating after a delicate oboe and saxophone solo into the now powerful main theme presented in the form of a majestic chorale. A “Vivace con bravura” brings the composition to a radiant conclusion, signifying a strengthened future for the city of Landeck.

Prokofiev composed his first piano concerto while at the Conservatory, in 1911 and 1912, and premiered it himself on August 7, 1912. The concerto is a single movement divided into clearly marked sections. Prokofiev could in this way keep the typical fast-slow-fast structure of the usual three-movement concerto, yet use some of the same thematic elements throughout all of his sections. Throughout the work, Prokofiev demonstrates his penchant for bright, percussive textures. The glockenspiel takes on a uniquely soloistic role, often teaming up with the piano to sparkle above the orchestral fray. With its bravura solos and daring harmonies, Prokofiev's first 'mature' composition announces him as a musical force to be reckoned with.

While Movements I and II of Dorff’s Concerto for Solo Percussion and Orchestra call for a large set-up, Movement III is a somewhat Russian-sounding bravura piece for Xylophone and Orchestra. This ALLEGRO VOLANTE movement has been published as a 6-minute recital work for Xylophone and Piano, also arranged by the composer for Xylophone and Band, as well as being available as a separate concerto movement for Xylophone and Orchestra.

Like all of Deiro's overtures, Trieste is in the style of Rossini's operatic overtures. A forceful, dramatic opening is followed by a warm bel canto melody then bounds into a series of opera buffa melodies, with dazzling bravura parts for everyone, even a rousing basso profundo for the bottom of the band. A brand-new festive melody, a breathtaking coda, and a dramatic maestoso restatement of the opening theme bring this happy escapade to a jubilant finale. Fun for everyone!

Smith’s first published march. A bravura opening fanfare punctuated with the percussion forces open this march. The first strain gives us a jaunty tune with baritones and trombones playing the countermelody. The second strain refers back to the opening fanfares with percussion section soli banding about. A reserved trio tune played by clarinets, first horn and baritone are assisted with chromatic runs played by flute, oboe, muted first trumpet and bells. The opening fanfares return in the break strain, which then gives us a terrific trio strain. Accessible and playable for all musicians!
