He continued his education at the Paris Conservatory and the University of Southern California where he received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition in 1966. Cohen has taught at the University of Alabama and Arizona State University and is presently Director of the Arizona State University Electronic Music Studio. With inspiration taken from composers Maurice Ravel, Arthur Benjamin and Charles Ives, Bourgeois take s a tongue-in-cheek approach to this challenging 3-movement work. While the work is infused with humor throughout, it still showcases his mastery of the wind band idiom.

In 1972, I wrote a Sonata for Two Pianos for two friends who were piano teachers at Wellington College. When in 1995 I was asked to write a work for wind band, I returned to this Sonata and have re-arranged and in the new version renamed it Fantasy Triptych. There are three movements: 1. Le Tombeau d'Arthur Benjamin Ravel wrote 'Le Tombeau de Couperin,' Arthur Benjamin wrote 'Le Tombeau de Ravel' and so the temptation to write 'Le Tombeau d'Arthur Benjamin' was overwhelming. At the end of the movement there is an oblique reference to Benjamin's own 'Jamaican Rumba' which accompanies a quote from an old Spanish folk song 'Loro, enciende el hervidor de agua.' 2. Mr. Bolt goes for a ride in his motor car, and Monsieur Ravel turns in his grave. The movement is dedicated to an old friend, Geoffrey Bolt, who adores the music of Ravel. but at the time of writing was learning to drive. He always described his vehicle as a motor car. To describe him as an impatient motorist would be a gross understatement. The refined suavity of Ravel's music was in complete contrast to these early manifestations of road rage, hence the central angry outburst. 3. The War March of the Ostriches The music of Charles Ives was fascinating me at the time of writing this movement and some of the influence has rubbed off in this rondo-like march. At the end there is a quote from the very beginning of the first movement. The title was inspired by the amusing antics of a group of ostriches during a visit to Bristol Zoo.

Orphaned toys come to life in this eerie tour of an abandoned toy store. The work opens and closes with Victor Herbert's dreamlike Toyland as a Jack-in-the-box plays Pop Goes the Weasel. A wealth of toy sounds make their appearance among diminished chords, tri-tones, and the Dies Irae, which surrounds an aleatoric section featuring a whole host of noisy toys. Highly accessible, extremely creative, and definitely memorable!

Quirks—a word defined as a sudden sharp turn or an unpredictable peculiarity of behavior or action—demonstrates the capricious nature of the title in its musical character. The music vacillates between fast and slow, happy and sad, extroverted and introverted, and just never goes where you expect. There is plenty of interplay between winds and percussion as the four and three notes of the main motive are tossed about the many instrumental colors. Cornish Coastal Walk is a beautiful new composition depicting the majestic cliffs and coastline of the Cornwall region in England. In the far southwest of England reaching out towards the Celtic Sea is the county Cornwall. A peninsula, Cornwall is surrounded by some of the world’s most picturesque scenery including beaches, cliffs, and rolling hills. Separated from the rest of England by the river Tamar, the Cornish take great pride in their culture including the pasty (a stuffed pastry and preferred lunch of miners), Cornish cream tea (not to be confused with rival Devon cream tea where the cream goes under the jam), and well known national heritage sights such as Rough Tor (Cornwall’s highest point), and Tintagel Castle (rumored birth place of King Arthur).In the spring and summer of 2017, I had the pleasure to visit Cornwall, while my wife was a visiting scholar at the University of Exeter in the neighboring county of Devon. One July afternoon, while she was making field observations (she’s a Cultural Anthropologist), I decided to take a stroll along the cliffs as was recommended by a friend. I set out from Boscastle, a small inlet village where one can enjoy the most delicious black currant ice cream, and I trekked up and down the cliffs for three or four miles before finally arriving in Tintagel. I had planned to continue on to Trebarwith Strand, home of the fantastic Port William tavern, but greatly underestimated the difficulty of the terrain.Along my walk I witnessed some of the most breathtaking views I have ever seen. The coast of this particular region of Cornwall is both majestic and peaceful. It is frighteningly powerful, but also loving and kind. It is the type of place where people have for years looked out over the sea longing for their loved ones to return. I hope this music brings you the same inner peace I found on my hike that day.This piece is dedicated to Neil and his sidekick Derek, without whom I might have been just another tourist.

Factory Child is a protest song against child sweatshops. The piece depicts the factory life of children laboring many hours a day and manufacturing the shoes and clothes that end up in American retail stores. Young performers will find this thought-provoking piece an excellent way to use their musical voice to affect change.
Factory Child is a protest song against child sweatshops. Written in memory of Mrs. Peterson, who loved children dearly, the piece depicts the factory life of children laboring 16+ hours a day, manufacturing the shoes and clothes that end up in American retail stores.Factory Child begins with factory sounds and an oppressive, repetitive pattern that supports the melody carried by the upper voices. The second section is composed of wistful, dream-like sounds and melodies that have traces of children’s songs that remind us that these children forced into labor would love to have the opportunity to play, attend school, and dream, but cannot and realistically have little hope for a life we consider normal.  The middle section gives way to more sounds from the factory. The climax is a raucous circus-like waltz using themes from both sections.The percussion parts can be covered by six players. Some players will need to cover two parts. Use someone from the wind section if you do not have six, as some of the parts, although important, are not very difficult. The second clarinet never goes over the break and the bass line is usually doubled in the euphonium as well as in the low reeds.This piece is an excellent way for young performers to use their musical voice to affect change. It is a great discussion starter for researching where our apparel comes from and why to stay away from some brands. It can also make students aware of the fantastic opportunity they have to attend school that children in other parts of the world do not. Young students will find this piece very thought provoking.Ed Kiefer .
