Glitter and glamour, good-looking people, a lot of Bling Bling and fast cars images like these will cross our minds when we think of the movie world. However, reality proves to be different : as a rule, a tremendous amount of work will have been done on the set before a film is ready to be shown on the big screen.
A visit to an actual movie set inspired John Emerson Blackstone to write a composition bearing the same name. He had both seen a number of characteristic attributes and heard the typical phrases used in film making, and he incorporated them into ‘On the Movie Set’ .

In the first part, ‘The Clapboard’, a ‘director’s assistant’ is supposed to shout “Quieton the set’” and “Action!”, as is done before a real scene is shot. Subsequently, in order to create the right atmosphere, the clacking of a ‘Clapboard’ should be heard.
During a romantic scene we should be transported to another world by means of sweet sounds in the background, so romantic music is of course heard in the next part, ‘Love Scene’.
At the end of a long working day ‘It’s a wrap’ is called on the set to inform everyone that the filming on that day is completed.

Now there is only one more thing left to dream of : an Oscar.....

The use of the right props will add to the performance and appreciation of ‘On the Movie Set’. A red carpet and a glamorous reception should give your audience the feeling they are attending a real ‘opening night’!

‘Glamour’ en ‘Glitter’, mooie mensen, veel ‘bling bling’ en snelle auto’s. Zomaar een aantal zaken waar we aan denken als het om de filmwereld gaat. Maar voordat de film klaar is voor de bioscoop moet er doorgaans hard gewerkt wordentijdens het draaien op de filmset.
Een bezoekje op een filmset inspireerde John Emerson Blackstone tot het schrijven van ‘On the Movieset’. Hij zag een aantal zeer karakteristieke attributen en hoorde kreten die hij verwerktein deze compositie.

In het eerste deel: ‘The Clapboard’, is het de bedoeling dat de assistent van de regisseur ‘de bekende kreten’ (Quiet on the set of And Action!) roept, voordat er een take opgenomen wordt. Daarnamoet natuurlijk met een ‘Clapboard’ geklakt worden.
Bij een ‘Love Scene’ hoort uiteraard sfeerverhogende romantische muziek. Want zwijmelen bij een film gaat nu eenmaal niet zonder zoete klanken.
Aan het einde van eenlange dag klinkt altijd ‘It’s a wrap’. Dit betekent dat het laatste shot van de dag gemaakt is.

Nu maar hopen dat er een oscar in het verschiet ligt.

Touted as Britain's second national anthem, this stately tune by C. Hubert H. Parry transcribes beautifully for wind band and would be perfect for concert or festival settings.

By the late 19th century Charles Hubert Parry was probably the most influential figure in English music. His works were performed at all the major festivals and as Director of the Royal College of Music, London, he founded a tradition of teaching form which many of the finest British composers benefitted. Much of his music nowadays in scarcely performed but some works have retained their popularity and none more than his setting of Blake's Jerusalem, published in 1916 and instantly taken up as an anthem during the First World War. Today it rivals Land of Hope and Glory in expressing the spirit of England in music.

In the far southwest of England reaching out towards the Celtic Sea is the county Cornwall. A peninsula, Cornwall is surrounded by some of the world’s most picturesque scenery including beaches, cliffs, and rolling hills. Separated from the rest of England by the river Tamar, the Cornish take great pride in their culture including the pasty (a stuffed pastry and preferred lunch of miners), Cornish cream tea (not to be confused with rival Devon cream tea where the cream goes under the jam), and well known national heritage sights such as Rough Tor (Cornwall’s highest point), and Tintagel Castle (rumored birth place of King Arthur).In the spring and summer of 2017, I had the pleasure to visit Cornwall, while my wife was a visiting scholar at the University of Exeter in the neighboring county of Devon. One July afternoon, while she was making field observations (she’s a Cultural Anthropologist), I decided to take a stroll along the cliffs as was recommended by a friend. I set out from Boscastle, a small inlet village where one can enjoy the most delicious black currant ice cream, and I trekked up and down the cliffs for three or four miles before finally arriving in Tintagel. I had planned to continue on to Trebarwith Strand, home of the fantastic Port William tavern, but greatly underestimated the difficulty of the terrain.Along my walk I witnessed some of the most breathtaking views I have ever seen. The coast of this particular region of Cornwall is both majestic and peaceful. It is frighteningly powerful, but also loving and kind. It is the type of place where people have for years looked out over the sea longing for their loved ones to return. I hope this music brings you the same inner peace I found on my hike that day.This piece is dedicated to Neil and his sidekick Derek, without whom I might have been just another tourist.

The Eastman Wind Ensemble is America's leading wind ensemble. Frederick Fennell first formulated the general concept of the wind ensemble at Eastman nearly 65 years ago. Under his leadership the group became known as the pioneering force in the wind ensemble movement in the United States and abroad. A. Clyde Roller served as conductor between 1962 and 1964, continuing the tradition established by Fennell. Donald Hunsberger became conductor in 1965 and led the ensemble for 37 years to international prominence. The ensemble's current director, Mark Davis Scatterday, was introduced as the fourth conductor of this prestigious group during the EWE's 50th anniversary celebration on February 8, 2002. Since its founding, the EWE has been the leader in elevating the wind repertory through recordings. Fennell's Mercury Recordings albums of the 1950s and early '60s are notable for their pioneering use of binaural, stereo, and 35mm recording techniques. These Living Presence recordings focused on standard band literature by the most respected classical composers -- heard for the first time in the newly balanced one-per-part instrumentation. They also centered on major repertory not found on traditional band programs, such as Mozart's Serenade in B-flat (the Gran Partita), Messiaen's Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum, and Stravinsky's Symphonies of Wind Instruments. Under Hunsberger, the EWE continued its progressive stance in recording techniques with participation in quadraphonic and digital recording. Since its founding, the ensemble has premiered more than 200 new works. The word ‘tsunami’ is of Japanese origin. When you look it up in a dictionary, you will find that it means ‘a great sea wave produced by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption’.
A megatsunami is the superlative of this awesome expression of power that nature can create, and has catastrophic consequences.

When Carl Wittrock completed this composition not many such big earth movements had occurred, but since then we have become all too familiar with the disastrous consequences which a tsunami may have.
On the 26th of December 2004 a heavy seaquake took place near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Tidal waves 10 meters in height ravaged the coastal regions ofmany countries for miles around. The tsunami took the lives of thousands of people and destroyed many villages and towns.

There are more areas which run the risk of being struck by a tsunami, such as the island of La Palma, one of the Canary Islands. This island is based on oceanic crust at a fracture zone and as such is one of nature’s time bombs. The consequences of a natural calamity like a megatsunami are immense.
In the case of La Palma, the tidal wave will move in the direction of South America, where it may reach 50 km inland, destroying everything on its way.

In his composition Wittrock describes an ordinary day which will have an unexpected ending.
Right from the beginning there seems to be something in the air, the music creating an oppressive atmosphere of impending disaster.
Themes are interrupted, broken off suddenly, followed by silence, suggesting the calm before the storm.
Suddenly a short climax (glissandi in the trombone part) indicates the seaquake, and the megatsunami is a fact. Hereafter follows a turbulent passage symbolising the huge rolling waves.
After nature’s force has spent itself, resignation sets in and the composition ends with a majestic ode to nature.

Toen Carl Wittrock deze compositie voltooide waren er nog niet veel voorbeelden van dergelijke grote bevingen, maar inmiddels weten we maar al te goed welke desastreuze gevolgen een tsunami kan veroorzaken.
Op 26 december 2004 vond er een zware beving plaats in de zee nabij het Indonesische eiland Sumatra. Vloedgolven van wel 10 meter hoog teisterden de kuststreken van menig land in de verre omtrek. De tsunami eiste duizendenmensenlevens en verwoestte vele dorpen en steden.

In het geval van La Palma begeeft de vloedgolf van enkele honderden meters zich richting Zuid Amerika met alle gevolgenvan dien. Tot ongeveer 50 kilometer landinwaarts heeft de megatsunami een allesverwoestende werking.

In de compositie schetst Wittrock een 'gewone' dag die ongewoon zal aflopen. Al vanaf het begin hangt er iets in delucht en is er sprake van een dreigende, beklemmende sfeer.
Thema's worden onderbroken door plotselinge afbrekingen en stiltes. Opeens is daar de korte climax (glissandi in trombones) die de beving symboliseert en de megatsunamiis een feit.
Een onrustig gedeelte vangt aan, daarmee de rollende, voortstuwende golven symboliserend. Na het natuurgeweld is er berusting en The Power of the Megatsunami wordt afgesloten met een majestueuze ode aan de nat.

A lot is known about the American composer Leroy Anderson. This son of Swedish immigrants played the piano, organ, accordion, trombone, tuba and double bass. He spoke several languages fluently and graduated from Harvard with first-class honours.While on military service, the army also commissioned him to write a manual on Icelandic grammar.He already started writing musical arrangements as a student, and from his 30th year arranged and composed for the Boston Pops Orchestra. Such melodiesas Serenata, The Typewriter, Sleigh Ride and Bugler�s Holiday made him world famous. His best-known work, Blue Tango, reached number one in the US charts in 1952, and it sold more than a million copies. In 1975, a year after hisdeath, he was given a star at the Walk of Fame in Hollywood.Most of his works last no longer than three minutes, about the maximum length of a single at that time. One work that lasts longer is his 1953 Piano Concerto in C for piano and orchestra.The first performance was in Chicago, conducted by the composer and with Eugene List at the piano. However, after three performances he was no longer happy with the work and withdrew it. He always intended to revise it, but never got round to it. Itwas only in 1989 that the Anderson family decided to republish the work.This three-part composition is on the one hand characterised by a careless elegance, but on the other one can hear the influence of Rachmaninoff, Copland, Gershwin, and evenBeethoven and Mozart, as well as the Viennese classics.Anderson used the sonata form for the first movement. It ends with a cadenza that carries us on into the second part (in e minor). The third part is a typically cheerful American folk dance in2/4 time, a so-called Hoe Down, with a lilting, lyrical passage as its middle section. At the end comes a solo passage followed by a rapid close.In this piano concerto, Anderson combines a rigidly classical form of composition with simple andappealing themes and elements from light music. So this work is a perfect synthesis of light music and what is called serious music, in the same way as Gershwin�s Rhapsody in Blue. A work that can be played equally well in a concerthall, at an open-air concert or even a pop concert.

Über den amerikanischen Komponisten Leroy Anderson lässt sich vieles berichten: Der Sohn schwedischer Immigranten spielte Klavier, Orgel, Akkordeon, Posaune, Tuba und Kontrabass, sprach neun Sprachen fließend, absolvierte mit einemMagna-cum-laude-Abschluss die Harvard Universität und verfasste während seiner Militärzeit im Zweiten Weltkrieg für die amerikanische Armee eine Grammatik des Isländischen. Schon während seiner Studentenzeit begann er zu arrangieren, ab Mitte der30er Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts arrangierte und komponierte er für das Boston Pops Orchestra. Aus seiner Feder stammen so bekannte Werke der leichten Muse wie Serenata, The Typewriter, Sleigh Ride oder Bugler�s Holiday. Sein wohlbekanntestes Stück, Blue Tango, wurde als erste Instrumentalkomposition über eine Million Mal verkauft und belegte im Jahr 1952 Platz 1 der US-Charts. Für seine Verdienste um die Schallplattenindustrie erhielt er ein Jahr nach seinem Tod einenStern auf dem Walk of Fame in Hollywood.Charakteristisch für seine Werke ist die Dauer: die meisten sind rund drei Minuten lang � mehr passte nicht auf den damals gebräuchlichen Tonträger, eine Singleschallplatte. Nur wenige seinerKompositionen sprengen diesen Zeitrahmen. Dazu gehört sein Konzert C-Dur für Klavier und Orchester. Er komponierte es 1953, die Uraufführung fand unter seiner Leitung und mit Eugene List am Klavier im selben Jahr in Chicago statt. Da Anderson mit demWerk aber nicht zufrieden war, zog er es im Sommer 1954, nach nur drei Aufführungen, wieder ein. Er hatte zeitlebens die Absicht, es zu überarbeiten, allein, es kam nicht mehr dazu. Erst 1989 entschied sich die Anderson-Familie dazu, dasKlavierkonzert wieder zu veröffentlichen.Das dreisätzige Werk zeigt die Unbeschwertheit und Eleganz, die Andersons sämtliche Kompositionen auszeichnen. Dennoch findet man darin auch Anklänge an Komponisten wie Rachmaninoff, Copland, Gershwin, undeben Beethoven und Mozart, sowie die Wiener Klassiker. Der erste Satz folgt der Sonatenhauptsatzform. An seinem Ende steht eine Klavierkadenz, die direkt in den langsamen zweiten Satz (in e-Moll) überleitet. Der dritte Satz schließlich ist einwaschechter Hoe Down, ein fröhlicher amerikanischer Volkstanz im 2/4-Takt, in dessen Zentrum aber eine lyrisch-gesangliche Passage steht. Eine weitere Solo-Kadenz führt das Werk in einen spritzigen Schlussabschnitt.In seinem Klavierkonzertvereinigt Anderson einen klassisch-traditionellen Form- und Kompositionsstil mit Elementen der Unterhaltungsmusik und eingängigen Melodien, die schon immer sein Markenzeichen waren. Daher bildet dieses Werk eine perfekte Synthese von ernster undleichter Musik.
