In 1966, the British singer-songwriters Des Dyer and Clive Scott founded the pop group Jigsaw. Nine years later they enjoyed their first great success with the catchy song Sky High which rode high in the charts in many countries throughout the world. The Japanese arranger Tomohiro Tabete has composed this exciting version for concert band.

Negen jaren later boekten ze hun eerste grote succes met de fraaie song Sky High, waarmee ze hoog scoorden op internationale hitlijsten.De Japanse arrangeur Tomohiro Tabete schreef van dit nummer een sprankelende versie voor harmonieorkest.

Desmond Dyer und Clive Scott gründeten 1966 in Australien die Popgruppe Jigsaw. Der große Erfolg stellte sich aber erst neun Jahre später ein - dann aber gewaltig: Mit dem Hit Sky High landeten sie weltweit in den Top 20 der Hitparaden. Seither wurde das Lied von verschiedenen Bands und Künstlern neu interpretiert. Tomohiro Tabete sorgte nun dafür, dass auch Blasorchester ihr Repertoire um diesen Pophit erweitern können.

The Atlas Symphony for symphonic wind band is an impressive and subtle work, thematically complex, with a rich orchestration, but also great beauty. The composer was keen to draw a parallel between an atlas, where all the geographical maps of the world are collected in one book, and his score, which brings together all the facets of his musical style. Despite being written without any breaks, the symphony is structured around three main ideas. It is based upon a series of notes that will become the very essence of the piece, its building blocks. Like the works of composers of serial music, the series appears in different forms - melodic and harmonic, thematic or simply asan accompaniment. With its wealth of rhythms and contrapuntal power, this piece is a compelling concerto for orchestra. The Orchestre de la Police Nationale was the first to be attracted to this work and premiered it with excellence under the baton of composer Thierry Deleruyelle.

Die Atlas Symphony für symphonisches Blasorchester ist ein eindrucksvolles, feinsinniges Werk, mit einer komplexen Thematik und einer reichhaltigen Orchestrierung, aber dennoch anmutig. Der Komponist beabsichtigte, eine Parallele zwischen einem Atlas, der geografische Karten der ganzen Welt enthält, und seiner Partitur zu ziehen, die alle Facetten seines persönlichen Musikstils enthält. Obwohl sie ohne Unterbrechung geschrieben ist, ist diese Symphonie doch auf drei Hauptachsen aufgebaut. Sie basiert auf einer Reihe von Noten, welche die Quintessenz, das Material des gesamten Stückes bilden. Wie bei den Komponisten serieller Musik tritt diese Reihe in verschiedenenGestalten auf - melodisch oder harmonisch, thematisch oder einfach als Begleitung. Mit seinem Reichtum an Rhythmen und der kontrapunktischen Brillanz ist die Atlas Symphony ein wahrhaftes Konzert für Orchester. Das Orchestre de la Police Nationale (Frankreich) war das erste Orchester, das sich von diesem Werk verführen ließ und spielte eine brillante Uraufführung unter der Leitung des Komponisten Thierry Deleruyelle.

La Symphonie Atlas pour grand orchestre d’harmonie est une œuvre imposante et subtile, l’orchestration riche et la thématique complexe mais néanmoins gracieuse. Le compositeur a tenu faire un parallèle entre l’Atlas, ce livre où toutes les cartes géographiques du monde sont répertoriées et sa partition, qui possède toutes les caractéristiques de son style musical. Volontairement écrite d’un seul tenant, elle s’articule néanmoins en trois axes. Sa construction est basée sur une série de notes qui deviendront l’essence même de la pièce, son matériau. Tel le travail des compositeurs de musique sérielle, « la série » apparaitra sous différentes formes, mélodiqueet harmonique, thématique ou simplement d’accompagnement. Sa richesse rythmique et son pouvoir contrapuntique fait de cette pièce un véritable concerto pour orchestre. C’est l’Orchestre de la Police Nationale qui a le premier été séduit par l’œuvre et qui en a fait la brillante création sous la direction du compositeur Thierry Deleruyelle.

Atlas Symphony è un brano grandioso, di enorme bellezza, pieno di sfumature, tematicamente complesso, con una ricca orchestrazione. La sinfonia è scritta senza interruzioni e basata su una serie di note che vengono proposte nella melodia, nell’armonia e nel tema. The Pavane - an old stately dance of Italian or Spanish origin - can be traced back to the 16th century. French composer Gabriels Faure's Pavane, written in 1886 for orchestra for a series of concerts in Paris, exudes charm, gentility even; the music flows easily yet with a sure sense of direction. In 1919 the composer reused it in his one-act divertissement Masques and Bergamasques. Faure was much revered during his lifetime as a professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire for many years together with his connection with church music as an organist. In concert performance the Pavane benefits from being allowed to unfold at its own unhurried pace and in its (mostly) own quiet way.

Glitter and glamour, good-looking people, a lot of Bling Bling and fast cars images like these will cross our minds when we think of the movie world. However, reality proves to be different : as a rule, a tremendous amount of work will have been done on the set before a film is ready to be shown on the big screen.
A visit to an actual movie set inspired John Emerson Blackstone to write a composition bearing the same name. He had both seen a number of characteristic attributes and heard the typical phrases used in film making, and he incorporated them into ‘On the Movie Set’ .

In the first part, ‘The Clapboard’, a ‘director’s assistant’ is supposed to shout “Quieton the set’” and “Action!”, as is done before a real scene is shot. Subsequently, in order to create the right atmosphere, the clacking of a ‘Clapboard’ should be heard.
During a romantic scene we should be transported to another world by means of sweet sounds in the background, so romantic music is of course heard in the next part, ‘Love Scene’.
At the end of a long working day ‘It’s a wrap’ is called on the set to inform everyone that the filming on that day is completed.

Now there is only one more thing left to dream of : an Oscar.....

The use of the right props will add to the performance and appreciation of ‘On the Movie Set’. A red carpet and a glamorous reception should give your audience the feeling they are attending a real ‘opening night’!

‘Glamour’ en ‘Glitter’, mooie mensen, veel ‘bling bling’ en snelle auto’s. Zomaar een aantal zaken waar we aan denken als het om de filmwereld gaat. Maar voordat de film klaar is voor de bioscoop moet er doorgaans hard gewerkt wordentijdens het draaien op de filmset.
Een bezoekje op een filmset inspireerde John Emerson Blackstone tot het schrijven van ‘On the Movieset’. Hij zag een aantal zeer karakteristieke attributen en hoorde kreten die hij verwerktein deze compositie.

In het eerste deel: ‘The Clapboard’, is het de bedoeling dat de assistent van de regisseur ‘de bekende kreten’ (Quiet on the set of And Action!) roept, voordat er een take opgenomen wordt. Daarnamoet natuurlijk met een ‘Clapboard’ geklakt worden.
Bij een ‘Love Scene’ hoort uiteraard sfeerverhogende romantische muziek. Want zwijmelen bij een film gaat nu eenmaal niet zonder zoete klanken.
Aan het einde van eenlange dag klinkt altijd ‘It’s a wrap’. Dit betekent dat het laatste shot van de dag gemaakt is.

Nu maar hopen dat er een oscar in het verschiet ligt.
