Ordered by difficulty in three volumes, the pieces are suitable for auditions, competitions or exams. The series contains original works by Bottesini, Dragonetti, Gretchaninoff, Hindemith, Laska, Regner, Reinagle, Teppo Hauta-aho and others as well as orchestral excerpts by Beethoven, Dvorak, Haydn, Mahler and arrangements of famous classical masterpieces. All pieces are included on the accompanying audio, as a full version and as a piano accompaniment. Volume 2 (easy to intermediate) contains pieces up to the 3rd position. As some new double bass tutors have a different approach in introducing position changes, volume 2 offers several pieces which reach the 2nd position, some pieces using only 1st and 3rd positions and some more difficult pieces which encompass all positions from half to third position.

The film noir genre of 1940s cinema typically includes a strong but flawed male lead (often a detective), a beautiful woman who coerces the male into committing murder or is a killer herself (a “femme fatale”), and a twisting plot line that involves one or more homicides. These movies typically are shot in black and white, with emphasis on shadows and light, alcohol and cigarettes, trench coats and fedoras. Most of the story lines do not have happy endings. Inspired by this genre, NOIR VIGNETTES consists of four movements, each depicting an aspect of film noir: Murder at Midnight, Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale, and Last Cigarette. String bass parts are provided both for standard orchestral tuning and for solo tuning.In the mid-1940s, film critics in France noticed a trend emerging in movies from the United States, which they coined film noir (which translates to “black film”). These movies were dark, moody, and pessimistic, reflecting the agitation and anxiety present in society following World War II. Several characteristics are commonly found in many of these movies, including a strong but flawed male lead (often a detective), a beautiful woman who either coerces the male lead into committing murder for her or is a killer herself (a “femme fatale”), and a twisting, turning plot line that involves one or more homicides. Additionally, there are several visual elements that these movies share: many are shot in black and white, with great emphasis on the use of shadows and light; alcohol and cigarettes are heavily consumed by men and women alike; and men typically wear trench coats and fedoras. Most of the story lines do not have happy endings. In addition, the Easy Concert Pieces serve as a motivating supplement in the classroom. All pieces are included in the booklets for download, as a full version and as playback (piano accompaniment). Volume 1 (ED 22551) contains pieces in the half and first position. Pieces for each individual position as well as pieces with change of position are offered in each epoch. Light bowing styles such as portato, staccato and legato as well as pizzicato are worked on, as well as simple dynamic gradations from piano to forte, crescendo and decrescendo and light phrasing. The selected pieces have varied characters with catchy melodies, different meters and various simple rhythms.

Angel of Dusk for double bass, two pianos and percussion is a chamber ensemble version of Einojuhani Rautavaara's double bass concerto dating from 1980/1993. The work is dedicated to Olga Koussevitzky, the widow of Sergey Koussevitzky. The Koussevitzky foundation sent Einojuhani Rautavaara to study with Aaron Copland in Tanglewood, and it was Sibelius who chose Rautavaara as the recipient of this scholarship. The solo part has been corrected by the composer in the summer of 2015.

Joseph Reinagle (1762-1825), pupil of the well-known cellist Johann Georg Schetky, was a versatile musician and composer. In 1800 he published 'A Concise Introduction to the Playing of the Violoncello' from which the three movements of the Sonatina have been taken. With its appealing melody and classical style, this music closes a major gap in the beginner's literature for double bass and piano. Reinagle's Sonatina is highly recommended for pupils' concerts and competitions. The musical text is based on the text of the first edition, using the original bowing and phrasing. Dynamic indications have been added by the editor as suggestions for lessons.
