Inspired by this genre, NOIR VIGNETTES consists of four movements, each depicting an aspect of film noir: Murder at Midnight, Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale, and Last Cigarette. String bass parts are provided both for standard orchestral tuning and for solo tuning.In the mid-1940s, film critics in France noticed a trend emerging in movies from the United States, which they coined film noir (which translates to “black filmâ€). These movies were dark, moody, and pessimistic, reflecting the agitation and anxiety present in society following World War II. It is the famous piece No. 23 of this collection which, even though attributed to Dragonetti, is commonly acknowledge as a tribute to him composed by Edouard Nanny. The book features a score and double bass part. Written in A major and divided in three parts, Allegro Moderato, Andante and Allegro Giusto, all its movements start with the piano which is later joined by the double bass. This latter then becomes the main element, the piano accompaniment being mainly chords. Quite difficult, this piece would fit the skills and abilities of advanced players, for recitals or concerts. Edouard Nanny (1872-1942) was a well-known French double bass player, composer and professor.

Angel of Dusk for double bass, two pianos and percussion is a chamber ensemble version of Einojuhani Rautavaara's double bass concerto dating from 1980/1993. The work is dedicated to Olga Koussevitzky, the widow of Sergey Koussevitzky. The Koussevitzky foundation sent Einojuhani Rautavaara to study with Aaron Copland in Tanglewood, and it was Sibelius who chose Rautavaara as the recipient of this scholarship. The solo part has been corrected by the composer in the summer of 2015.
