Gliere's Two Pieces, Op. 9 is an early work, originally written for double bass with the two movements having been beautifully arranged for Euphonium and Piano by Ralph Sauer.The Intermezzo is lyrical, sensual and Eastern sounding.The Tarantella is a sprightly folk dance of southern Italy. The curious name comes from the wolf spider or Tarantula whose bite is highly poisonous and in earlier times was believed to cause the victims to engage in a frenzied dance. Arnold Schoenberg's Six Little Pieces, Opus 19, originally for Piano, were published in 1913 at a time when the composer was reacting to his feelings of the excesses of the Romantic Period. They were composed concurrently with his gigantic work Gurre-Lieder. The first five pieces were written in one day and the last one shortly after the death of Gustav Mahler as a rumored tombeau or memorial. Ralph Sauer has artfully arranged Three French Vocalises for Euphonium and Piano by three well-known composers from the 20th Century: Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger and Joseph Canteloube. Each has a unique style and total about 5-6 minutes in length. Written in bass clef, their modest ranges make them appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

The Bestiary or The Procession of Orpheus was written by Poulenc in 1919. Mr. Sauer's adaptation of six short movements of about 5 minutes in length, originally for voice are poems from 1911 by Guillaume Apollinaire about animals: Camel, Goat, Grasshopper, Dolphin, Crayfish and Carp.
This music is very suitable for young performers at the intermediate level and is a great way to introduce them to a major 20th century composer who's only other music for brass is the famous Trio.
