Faure is well known for his lyricism and haunting harmonies. In a way, he was the father of French Impressionist music.

The Serenade, Opus 98 was originally written for the great 20th century Cellist, Pablo Casals.

Mr. Ralph Sauer has kept the arrangement in the same key as the Cello. The work is playable by advanced performers.

Paul Marie Theodore Vincent d'Indy was born in Paris into an aristocratic family of royalist and Catholic persuasion. He had piano lessons from an early age from his paternal grandmother, who passed him on to Antoine François Marmontel and Louis Diemer. His main influence was Cesar Franck. These three pieces were some of his many works for Piano. Opus 33 was inspired by a trip to Bayreuth, the musical home of Wagner and the Black Forest region. Opus 33 no. 1 from 1889 is titled ? with no explanation of itself. Opus 33 no. 10 is titled Lermoos, which is a delightful skiing village in Austria right on the border with Germany. Germany's largest mountain is in perfect view, possibly giving the movement its spirit.
Opus 28 is a Serenade for Violin and Piano published in 1900. It is lithe, subtle and lyrical.

Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel wrote over 460 works, mostly for solo piano and voice (lieder). She set over 34 songs to poems by Goethe, who was her favorite poet. Her songs are very expressive and are in a similar style as Schubert. The Goethe Lieder is a collection of four songs and is just right for a young performer at the intermediate level, however even a mature artist will enjoy the beautiful music of this talented composer.

The Five Pieces in Folk Style by Schumann were originally written for Cello and Piano. They have been expertly transcribed for Euphonium by Ralph Sauer, retired Principal Trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The five movements are in contrasting styles and work very well for Euphonium. Schumann was considered the Poet of the Romantics. This music is expressive and full of robust and elegant phrases. For moderately advanced performers. The complete work is almost 17 minutes in length and can be a major work on your concert. Parts are supplied for bass and treble clef readers.

Massenet's Three Pieces for Piano, Four Hands Opus 11 was published in 1867. Two of the pieces were adapted for Cello in 1877. Mr. Sauer has arranged these two pieces for Euphonium bass clef and Piano:
1. Andante sostenuto
2. Allegretto vivo scherzando
The Andante is flowing and lyrical with the Allegretto being a lively 6/8 dance in A-B-A form.
The two movements total about 5 minutes and are appropriate for advanced performers.

Mendelssohn's expressive Sonata No. 1 for Cello, Opus 45 was composed in October 1838.

The Sonata has three movements and works beautifully for Euphonium.

This 25-minute work for advanced performers, all in bass clef, is a wonderful composition and is a great test of musicianship, stamina and technique for both performers.

Mendelssohn's Sonata has been brilliantly transcribed by Ralph Sauer.
