The Serenade, Op. 37 was conceived for Cello with Piano accompaniment, but later in life the composer scored the work for the solo instrument with orchestra. The Low Brass world knows Rimsky-Korsakov for his Trombone Concerto for Band. The Serenade has a very similar mood to the slow movement of the Concerto. It's beautiful lilting rhythm combined with a wonderful melody makes this work very worthwhile.Mr. Sauer's arrangement brings a beautiful feel to this 4 minute work, which is appropriate for advanced performers.Parts for Bass and Treble readers are supplied.

Beau Soir (Beautiful Evening) is a French song written by Claude Debussy in the Impressionist style. The work has been arranged for many instruments. This version for Trombone (or Euphonium) and Piano by Gordon Cherry is in the original key and in bass clef. The music is subtle and full of beautiful colors, giving an impression of peace, warm breezes, rose-colored sunsets and fields of wheat. Faure is well known for his lyricism and haunting harmonies. Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel wrote over 460 works, mostly for solo piano and voice (lieder). She set over 34 songs to poems by Goethe, who was her favorite poet. Her songs are very expressive and are in a similar style as Schubert. The Goethe Lieder is a collection of four songs and is just right for a young performer at the intermediate level, however even a mature artist will enjoy the beautiful music of this talented composer.

Paul Marie Theodore Vincent d'Indy was born in Paris into an aristocratic family of royalist and Catholic persuasion. He had piano lessons from an early age from his paternal grandmother, who passed him on to Antoine François Marmontel and Louis Diemer. His main influence was Cesar Franck. These three pieces were some of his many works for Piano. Opus 33 was inspired by a trip to Bayreuth, the musical home of Wagner and the Black Forest region. Opus 33 no. 1 from 1889 is titled ? with no explanation of itself. Opus 33 no. 10 is titled Lermoos, which is a delightful skiing village in Austria right on the border with Germany. Germany's largest mountain is in perfect view, possibly giving the movement its spirit. Opus 28 is a Serenade for Violin and Piano published in 1900. It is lithe, subtle and lyrical.

As the title suggests the work dying and dancing for Euphonium solo and Piano accompaniment is in two parts, which are played without a pause between the two.The first part, an adagio, is not necessarily meant to be evocative of the actual act of passing away, but more perhaps of the contemplation and reflection upon one's life as that time approaches, and particularly of sorrow over regret and disappointment. The unsettled mood of the music reflects this bitterness, and stands in contrast to the expansive peace of the grave, heard at the beginning and end of the adagio.Dance, with ironic wit, the second part, is the other side of the same coin; perhaps humor of the gallows describes its spirit. At once fatalist and mocking, it brings to mind the words of the ancient teacher Koheleth, The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. I was pleased to compose dying and dancing in 2013 for Mark Kellogg, a superb Euphonium artist and my former trombone iProfessor at the Eastman School of Music.

Granados was a Spanish composer whose music had the unique style of his homeland burned into his soul. He was also a very talented painter in the style of Goya.
The Two Dances, 1. Oriental and 2. Fandango are taken from the 12 danzas espanolas, volume I from 1890, for Piano.
Mr. Sauer has brilliantly taken the solo Piano part and divided it between solo Euphnium and Piano.
Euphonium performers will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the solo repertoire.
The Two Dances (in tenor clef) are about 6 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.
