On September 19th, 1991, a mummified corps of a man was found at the Similaun glacier in the Otztaler Alps. The glacier unveiled an early man after 5300 years, with all his personal belongings. His clothes and weapons were fairly well preserved and allow us today a deeper insight into that period. Austrian nature filmmaker Kurt Mu ndel reconstructed the life of this man and made a film, which, based on facts, shows how it might have been then. Otto M. Schwarz used this documentary as an opportunity to write a work for symphonic wind band and musically resurrect the Man in the Ice..

Saxpack was commissioned for the centenary of the Polizeimusik Wien (Vienna police orchestra). One of the most prolific saxophonists in all of Austria, Gert Kolaja, is a member of this professional orchestra. One of Otto M. Schwarz's goals in his compositions for concert band is to continually develop and expand the genre. That is why Saxpack features a fully composed crime scne, complete with high-speed chases and experiencing Vienna at night. The work is composed in a very modern style, incorporating many contemporary saxophone techniques. As well as switching from alto to soprano saxophone, the piece offers ample opportunity to improvise. This is definitely a piece that saxophonists, band, and listeners will enjoy.
