Magic Flute on Stage-Album for Children?Tomorrow I am going to write a collection of miniatures for children. For some time I have been thinking it would be good to alleviate the dearth of musical literature for children.? (From a letter Tchaikovsky wrote to Nadezhda von Meck on 30 April 1878) Tchaikovsky?s collection of piano pieces for children is subtitled ?Collection of easy pieces in the style of Schumann.? The instruments Pyotr Il?yich Tchaikovsky studied included the flute but he never wrote any music for it. How ever many of the miniatures from the Album for Children suit the flute perfectly - from the expressive and romantic Morning Prayer and Sweet Dream to the moretechnical Mazurka and Neapolitan Song. These touchingly lyrical miniatures and almost virtuosic dance pieces arranged for flute and piano will be loved by young flautists and met with enthusiasm by concert audiences.

Jindrich Feld's Sonata for Flute and Piano is frequently performed by virtuoso flautists. Composed in 1957 the Sonata is elaborate and quirky and has been recorded by leading artists including Jeffrey Khaner and James Galway. Born in Prague Feld (1925-2007) studied Violin and Viola with his parents before studying at the Conservatory and Academy of Music of his native city. His compositions predominantly instrumental soon became popular being performed all over the world. As reflected in his Sonata for Flute and Piano Feld's style is deeply rooted in the Czech musicaltradition but he also integrated the main styles of 20th century Western music. The Sonata is made up of three movements 1. Giocoso (playful) 2. Grave (serious) and 3. Vivace (lively). Each movement of the Sonata presents different challenges from fast semiquaver flourishes to the lyrical top register of the Flute. This Feld piece is highly virtuosic yet an excellent and enjoyable performance for all advanced flautists.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) Flute Concerto in D is an adaptation of the original Oboe Concerto in C which the composer reworked in 1778. The Concerto remains widely studied and performed on both instruments making it one of the more important Concerti in the woodwind repertoire. Concerto in D is in three movements; 1. Allegro aperto 2. Adagio non troppo and 3. Rondo: Allegretto. The first and last movements are in the tonic key whilst the second movement is in the subdominant key of G major. A Dutch flautist of the time Ferdinand de Jean commissioned Mozartfor four Flute quartets and three Flute concerti. However the composer who famously disliked the Flute only completed three quartets and one concerto. Instead of composing a second concerto Mozart rearranged his Oboe Concerto with substantial changes for it to fit with the Flute. De Jean did not approve yet the Concerto in D for Flute remains as popular to this day as the Concerto in C for Oboe.

For Flute And Piano-The composer has drawn from her Scottish background for inspiration in this piece. In the central section of Piper's Dream the music hints at real Scottish folk music. The outer sections are freer and players are encouraged to enjoy the spirit of improvisation. At times the flautist reflects the sound of the bagpipes imitating the instrument's characteristic 'fall' in the closing phrases of the piece. French composer Henri Büsser entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1889. He won the 1893 Prix de Rome and led a highly successful career as a composer conductor teacher and organist. His compositions for a variety of instruments are exceptional Prélude Et Scherzo for Flute and Piano being no exception. As reflected in Prélude Et Scherzo Büsser's compositional style was sophisticated yet true to the 19th century French tradition. Elements of the Prélude include chromaticism use of a wide tessitura complex rhythms and virtuosic semiquaverflourishes. The Scherzo displays use of varying time signatures a quick tempo and scalic passages. For all advanced Flute players Büsser's Prélude Et Scherzo is essential to a varied repertoire.

André Jolivet (1905-1974) established his love for composition from a young age. This remained throughout his life and he held the post of Professor of Composition from 1966-1970 at the Paris Conservatoire. Fantaisie Caprice for Flute and Piano was published in 1954 and remains highly regarded. Jolivet himself a cellist wished to explore composition for all instruments and therefore has a considerable number of works in all fields. The composer's style is also known for its spirituality and the desire to associate the everyday with the magical and the human with the universal. Jolivet draws on acoustics andatonality as heard in his Caprice Fantasy. The piece requires advanced skills due to its use of complex rhythms and exploited tonality. For all advanced flautists Jolivet provides an exciting alternative piece for the instrument's repertoire.

Grades 1 - 4-As I sit myself down to write this brief foreword I ask myself can there be music more stirring than these old Cornish folk melodies? Though not Cornish myself (I confess to being born a little further up the road in Bristol) I feel I have spent sufficient time in these 'ere parts to resonate with the sturdy brass band tradition that continues to permeate this incomparably beautiful rugged county. One can almost detect a French 'accent' when listening to the piano music of Debussy and likewise speaking as a lapsed brass player there is undoubtedly something of the Cornish twang about Trelawny when played on a cornet or euphonium. Then again one gets a different yetentirely convincing effect upon hearing these melodies rendered on woodwind instruments; hence with a little gamesmanship on my part I am pleased to see my collection of these fifteen delectable ditties come to fruition in the form of arrangements for treble clef brass instruments (in B flat and E flat) trombone and tuba (bass clef) horn in F flute clarinet and bassoon.While many will find themselves humming the likes of Going up Camborne Hill Lamorna or The Helston Furry Dance even before they have turned to the first page - for these are indelibly intertwined with Cornish culture I wonder if I might draw your attention to The Cornish Squire The Pool of Pilate and Cold Blows the Wind Today Sweetheart which are quite simply sublime melodies perhaps needing that extra bit of help in bringing them to mind nowadays. In the best tradition of musical hand-me-downs Cornish folk music works equally ideally sung and played and only by doing so on a regular basis can such traditions hope to continue forward with vigour and authority. A legitimate way of achieving this is to revitalise the harmonic scheme of these ancient tunes and bring them up to date for a modern audience; after all it was such an approach that fuelled the imagination of Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams in decades past while skilfully paying homage to the

'Krystallen' for flute and piano was written in 1973 for the flautist Susan Milan who gave the first performance on BBC Radio 3 with Clifford Benson in January 1975.The music is in three sections the last of which is avaried repeat with palindromic elements of the opening. These outer sections are texturally three-part inventions consisting of gently interweaving equal-voiced polyphony while in the central passage individual figures areisolated and exchanged by both instruments.

The flute was used widely in the Renaissance and this collection of arrangements are from the 16th and 17th centuries. Most of these pieces were composed for other instruments such as the Lute and Viola De Gamba.
