The Partita was virtually unknown until 1917 when the manuscript (call number: Mus. Ms. Bach P 968) was acquired by the then Royal Library in Berlin from the heirs of the former Thomaskantor and avid Bach collector Wilhelm Rust (1822-1892). For this reason the Partita for Flute BWV 1013 was not included in the pioneering Gesamtausgabe der Bachgesellschaft finished in 1900. In addition it seems possible that Wilhelm Rust intentionally withheld the piece from publication despite the fact that he had generously supported the Bachgesellschaft edition in its early stages. Today the Partita is well known though it is worth remembering that this piece is one of the latestadditions to the canon of Bach's works.- Urtext of the New Bach Edition

Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita in A minor for solo Flute actually entitled 'Solo pour la flûte traversière' is one of the undisputed gems of the Flute repertoire. The work is extant in only one copy as autograph material of the composer has not survived. This raises a number of questions and problems which the present edition faces again not only in the preface and notes on interpretation but also in the musical text itself. Due to the meticulous examination and assessment of all text details the transition to the repetition of the second part in the Allemande for example is structured differently than in most establishededitions. The practical performance notes examine the musical text on the basis of practical sources of contemporaries of Bach as well as in accordance with the principles of musical rhetoric.

First written as a Violin or Oboe Concerto in G minor now lost it was then transposed and re-used as the Sinfonia to the Cantata BWV 156 in F major first performed in 1729. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Sonata in A minor for solo Flute constitutes a counterpart to the partita of his father Johann Sebastian in the same key. Created in 1747 but unpublished until 1763 it heralds the sentimental style of a new era compared to the ca. 30 years older work of his father. The edition is based on the first edition which is hidden among Piano works by C. Ph. E. Bach and other composers in the anthology 'Musikalisches Mancherley'. A separate edition also published in 1763 proved to be an offspring of the first edition with identical musical text and could be eliminated as source for the edition. But the edition wasalso based on a late 18th-century copy from the Giedde Collection in Copenhagen which is of great significance to the Flute literature. Although it also seems to go back to the first edition it nevertheless turns out to be a contemporary corrective to deficiencies of the first edition in some passages.
