Concerto IX. Woodcock’s only surviving musical compositions are a set of twelve concertos (3 for flute, 3 for recorder, and 3 for oboe) published by Walsh and Hare in London circa 1727. The concertos were originally published under the title: XII Concertos. The three flute concertos in this set are the earliest known published for that instrument, and the three oboe concertos are the first known by an English composer. Sinuhe the Egyptian is a historical novel written in 1945 by the Finnish author Mika Waltari (* 19. SeptemberHelsinki). The author additionally undertook comprehensive historical studies, and the novel with its extensive cultural history and customs of the Orient in pre-Christian times became a worldwide success. The novel also gained recognition among Egyptologists. Sinuhe the Egyptian was in turn an inspiration for the composer Olli Mustonen to create a work for the archaic instrument the oboe. The original version of this two-movement piece additionally fulfilled the composer s wish to dedicate a composition to his wife Sole who is also an oboist.The current version for flute was written for the Danish flutist Janne Thomsen.

âNT 22 010 - Sophie Lacaze: La Lune dans l'Eau, for young storytelling flautist In 1993, composer Sophie Lacaze chose the translucent timbre of the flute to explore the 'mysterious origins' of vowels and their association with colours in Rimbaud's poem Voyelles (NT 14 451 Z). The composer's fascination with this age-old instrument has never ceased to grow, and was further impelled by her encounter with Pierre-Yves Artaud, to whom she dedicated Les quatre éléments and Het Lam Gods II. Sophie Lacaze has now produced a score for young storytelling flautist in La Lune dans L'eau, a study miniature initially written for saxophone students and published in the Opensax collection (AL 30 701). Written for Year 3 and up, the piece delicately interlaces music and poetry, with the musician pronouncing aloud a haiku by Ueda Chôshû (1852-1932): 'Though in a thousand shards / It is always there / The moon on water.' Written by the French flautist and composer Marcel Moyse, Beginning the Flute is a method for flute beginners. Created as a supplement for other existing methods such as Taffanel-Gaubert, Gariboldi, or Remusat, Beginning the Flute works as an introductory ABC and provides the beginner with preliminary exercises. These 26 pages consist of thirteen lessons in two pages, the first one to learn the technique and to develop a good sonority and the second to progress with these. If the player encounters difficulties with tempo or breathing for example, they could work on the first page of each lesson and come back later on the second ones, once more technique has been acquired. Considered as a maestro by some musicians, Marcel Moyse (1889-1984) has composed many flute methods and exercise books that are also published by Alphonse Leduc, such as Gammes et Arpèges (1933), De la Sonorité (1934) and Mécanisme-Chromatisme (1927). His methods are widely used and recognised worldwide.

Having studied the flute with virtuosos Paul Taffanel, Adolphe Hennebains and Philippe Gaubert at the Paris Conservatoire, Marcel Moyse (1889-1984) soon became a virtuoso of the instrument himself. His editions of Soussmann's 24 Daily Studies for Flute is one of many popular study books compiled by the renowned flautist. During his career, Moyse frequently played solo flute with many orchestras, including performing the main concertos of the repertory. As well as performing and composing, Moyse was responsible for the training of a brilliant generation of flautists at the Paris Conservatoire. Following WWI, the composer moved to the United States where he continued to perform, compose and teach. It is during his time in the USA that Moyse composed his extensive number of instructive books on instrumental technique, including Soussmann's 24 Daily Studies, which today remain universally accepted and popular. Moyse's book is essential to all aspiring advanced flautists.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) Flute Concerto in G was written by the composer in 1778. The concerto remains widely studied and performed on the flute, making it one of the most important concerti in the instrument's repertoire. Paul Taffanel and Philippe Gaubert's composed cadenzas for the work are essential to all performers of the concerto. Concerto in G is in three movements; 1. Allegro maestoso, 2. Adagio ma non troppo, and 3. Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The first and last movements are in the tonic key, whilst the second movement is in the subdominant key of D major. All three movements contain a cadenza which initially would have been left for the performer to improvise. However, cadenzas have since been written, including those of Taffanel and Gaubert. Both were prominent flautists of their time and their understanding of the flute concerto repertoire is second to none, making their cadenzas well-informed and essential to performers of the concerto.

It is a melodious work that is relatively challenging and could be played in recitals or for contests. Makoto Shinohara is a Japanese composer from Osaka. He studied in France with Olivier Messiaen and Tony Aubin and in Germany with Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Gottfried Koenig. He wrote some Orchestral pieces, some chambre music some electronic music and some works for traditional Japanese instruments.â€.
