About Suzuki Method
The Suzuki Method is based on the principle that all children possess ability and that this ability can be developed and enhanced through a nurturing environment. All children learn to speak their own language with relative ease and if the same natural learning process is applied in teaching other skills, these can be acquired as successfully. Suzuki referred to the process as the Mother Tongue Method and to the whole system of pedagogy as Talent Education. During this time of the COVID-19 health crisis, wearing masks, and high racial tensions, I decided to compose four short solo woodwind works for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, which represent the core woodwind section in an orchestra. I was inspired to compose these short pieces after I first heard Igor Stravinsky's three short pieces for clarinet, which totals a little more than four minutes in duration. I thought that it would be nice to highlight and honor my African-American male colleagues in the orchestral music world. I wanted to celebrate the fact that they are the principal player in the section of their respective orchestras. The short pieces are as follows: Principal Brother No. 1 for flute solo for Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 2 for oboe solo for Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 3 for clarinet solo for Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Principal Brother No. 4 for bassoon solo for Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. These works all begin with notes that are representative of their name; D for Demarre, B for Titus (ti in solfège starting on C), A for Anthony, and Bb for Bryan. There is also a rhythmic figure in the opening measures of each piece, which represent the utterance of their names. “With music for Flute Quartets being most commonly rearranged for the ensemble, it is unusual that a work is originally composed for that precise instrumentation. It is for that reason that Pierre Max Dubois' Quatuor for Flutes has been considerably well-received. As a student of Darius Milhaud, Dubois brought ideas of Les Six, of which Milhaud was a member, into the mid-1900s. Dubois' compositions are characteristically light with interesting and unusual harmonic and melodic textures, as conveyed in this Quatuor for Flutes. With all four parts being technically demanding, exploiting extended techniques to the maximum, this piece provides a challenging but enjoyable performance. Moreover, including a full score and separate parts, this edition is ideal. With few pieces for this instrumentation exisitng as original compositions, all Flute Quartets must ensure they try out Dubois' enticing four-movement piece. â€.

An Advanced Guide to Quicker LearningKnow The Score is a guide to quicker learning for advanced flautists. It was originally published in 2012 and designed with the DipABRSM Quick Study in mind – a previously unseen extended piece of music for which 5 minutes preparation time was given prior to an assessed performance. The music was at roughly grade 6 level, based on an assumption that a diploma standard player should be capable of tackling the test in this relatively short amount of time. Following the recent withdrawal of the qualification, the continued aim of this newly edited series is to boost the more advanced player’s confidence at quick learning. Two assumptions are made here — that you are a diploma level flautist, and that a reasonable level of sight-reading skill is in place. That said, if you’re less proficient at sight-reading, you should find much in the book that will help you to improve and feel more confident. Alternatively, the book will be of interest to teachers seeking varied, approachable repertoire and theory content to support a keen grade 6 pupil’s longer-term learning. The book contains 15 original quick study pieces, 8 of which have guides.

This work was composed in 1969 and I had the honor of releasing it in Algorta (Vizcaya) on June 22, 1970. I have played afterwards in several occasions and recorded on CD. It is the first work composed by this author devoted to the flute and opens a long series of her works with this instrument, which have narrowed my collaboration with Maria Luisa Ozaita who I also have a close friendship with.These pieces are framed in a time in which the composer has reached her creative maturity and her inspiration stands out on its own. These works shape a brief triptych which movements have a characteristic personality and are well contrasted. The first one has a spring-like lyricism with sparkles of irony. The second on presents a meditative melody that consists of sighs that are bounded on the weft of an accompaniment that the flute pinpoints a in the low register. A binary dance of a very rhythmic spirit closes the work to a nice finish.
