Jules Mouquet (1867-1946) was a French composer, music professor, and arts advocate. He graduated from the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied under Xavier Leroux and Théodore Dubois. The majority of his catalogue remains obscure and is rarely heard today. The notable exception is Flûte de Pan, Op. 15 (1906) originally for flute and orchestra and later arranged by Mouquet into a sonata for flute and piano. Cinq Pièces Brèves, Op. 39, or Five Short Pieces are characteristic of Mouquet’s late Romantic Style; all are short in form, chromatic, free flowing and impressionistic.

Flamenco is an art form involving highly dramatic music and dance. The form is strongly associated with the Andalusia region of southern Spain. Its actual origins are less clear, though historians theorize that gypsies brought the predecessors of flamenco to the region as they migrated from India prior to the 15th century. The form took on traits from cultures that the gypsies encountered in Andalusia, including Spanish, Sephardic, Islamic, and Moorish musical traditions. Over the centuries, Spain's ruling classes undertook systematic persecutions of populations who did not agree with their religious ideals, forcing gypsies to take refuge in Andalusia's isolated mountain regions to survive. Not surprisingly, the topics of the gypsies' songs frequently touch on longing, despair, rage, anguish, and hope.Suenos de Flamenco (Flamenco Dreams) portrays a young gypsy couple who dance the flamenco with great longing, passion, and vigor. The piece was commissioned by Duo Montagnard (Joseph Murphy, saxophone, and Matthew Slotkin, guitar). A Tambourin is a lively dance with two beats. Originally from Provence is was often accompanied by a pipe and a tambourine. Melodic simplicity and poignant rhythm were characteristic features, often imitating the hand striking the percussion instrument. They were most popular widespread across France and Europe in the 18th Century, this dance often inspired the more sophisticated court composers, especially in France. This volume consists of 14 Tambourines by some of the great composers including Philibert de Lavigne, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Georg Friedrich Handel and Jean-Marie Leclair, all arranged for Guitar and Flute by Bent Larsen and Jan Sommer.

Written for and first performed by Marcelo Barbosa and Fabio Zanon at the Wigmore Hall in October 2003, these five pieces are a distillation of my impressions of Brazil (specifically Rio) on my visit there in 1996, although there is no attempt at representation, beyond the waves in the title, which suggested the shape and sounds of some of the material for the work. The duration of the whole set is around 18 minutes: the composer is happy for the central three to be performed as a set, in reverse order ie. 4, 3 and 2.
