The composer's rich song output includes his Wunderhorn songs, the Songs of a Wayfarer, the Rückert songs, the Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) as well as movements from his symphonies and the Song of the Earth. In preparation for Carol Wincenc's landmark Naumburg Award Recital at New York's Lincoln Center she asked composer Daniel Paget to create a work drawn from the world of wonderful Romanian folk music for nai or panpipes. The result was Romania! Fantasy for Flute and Piano a duet suggestive of both the nai and the cimbalom (hammered dulcimer).
