Nico Schoeters took his first percussion lessons with Eric Buyle in the Academy for Music and Word in Boom, near Antwerp, after getting the hang of it through private lessons by Jozef Vervliet. Afterwards he continued his music studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where he was taught by Leo Ouderits, Carlo Willems and Koen Wilmaers. In 1998 he graduated there with great distinction as Master in percussion. After cooperating on various projects in Belgium and abroad as a freelance percussionist, Nico took up a position as a percussionist in the National Orchestra of Belgium. However, despite of all his achievements as a percussionist, Nico Schoeters didn’t take his first musical steps by playing percussion, but by playing the piano. His love for the piano remained a common thread in his musical career. For example, he played numerous gigs as a pianist with his jazz quartet ‘Just Friends, consisting of a number of top musicians who are his friends. A welcome addition to the bass flute repertoire, Dorff’s 14-minute sonata is designed as two pairs of slow-fast movements. While composed as a complete 4-movement sonata, either half may be performed alone as a 7-minute recital work. The movement titles are: I. Sprawling, burbling; II. Sparkling, glistening; III. Under Winter; and IV. Spring Spirits.
When Peter Sheridan commissioned me to write a piece for bass flute and piano, his only requests were a sonata-like multi-movement work, and some kind of reference to New York, where we both grew up. Just the thought of a bass flute, with its broad and mighty airstream, already reminded me of the mighty Hudson River: from the dense woods of upstate New York, through the beautiful landscapes of New Paltz and Poughkeepsie, down through the celebrated Manhattan waterway.As I daydreamed how to build a sonata inspired by the Hudson, I thought of its deep primal nature carved by the Ice Age, and the life within the river and on its shores long before humans arrived. I thought of how the river’s magnetism drew Native Americans who honored and built their lives around it. I thought of beautiful trees and wildlife, the annual cycles of ecosystems, and the natural symbiosis between the river itself, the life within, and the life on land spawned by the river’s resources.I wondered what if Thoreau had sat by the Hudson rather than by Walden Pond; I wondered what if Hesse had set Siddhartha in the Hudson Valley with this river as his metaphor for the flow of life and time.I wondered whether the sonata should flow from north to south, or have chronological references. I wondered if I should allude to the many poets and painters who have drawn inspiration from the mighty Hudson. Every thought led to the river’s essence, its own spirit and life — flowing through raw nature, from skinny trickles to mightiness spawning cities; supporting subtle life, and becoming a central commons for human societies.The subtitle Spirit of the Hudson brings it all together.* * *The sonata is built in 4 movements, with formal inspiration from the Baroque: A slow Mvt. 1 “Sprawling, burbling” leads directly to the rapid Mvt. 2 “Sparkling, glistening,” followed by another slow-fast pair: Mvt. 3 “Under Winter” which leads directly into Mvt. 4 “Spring Spirits.” In addition to performances of the complete sonata, either pair of movements may be performed on its own for a shorter concert segment.SONATA (SPIRIT OF THE HUDSON) was premiered at the International Low Flutes Festival in April 2018 by its commissioner, bass flutist Peter Sheridan, with Hyeeun Hahm as pianist.

In addition he started composing piano works in 2012. Cosmopolydian is my first composition for symphonic windband. It's a solo piece for flute and vibraphone which is dedicated to Inge Smedts, principal piccolo at the Royal Wind Band of the Belgian Guides. It is written in the context of a musical project ‘Cocktail Maison'. This project includes a concert on May 25th, 2017 in De Singel in Antwerp where this work will be premiered, a CD recording and a concert tour. All the pieces for this project are new compositions by Piet Swerts, Jef Neve, Klaas Coulembier, Etienne Houben, Bart Watté, Jan Huylebroeck, Francois Glorieux and myself. All the compositions are inspired by a cocktail. My choice is the Cosmopolitan, but the non-alcoholic version, the mocktail actually. The title Cosmopolydian is a nod to the lydian scale which I used as a base for the majority of the piece. The idea behind the music is an image of children enjoying themselves, worry-free, during the holidays. Tired but satisfied, they go to sleep and have wonderful dreams. The next day they wake up to start a beautiful new day. The work is constructed in a typical ABA form. A quick first part: ‘sparkling allegro', which of course should sound very light and playful. A slow middle part warm adagio, in which the beautiful dreams become audible. The last part is a re-exposition of the first part in which eventually all the themes merge into the final.

François Devienne (1759 - 1803) was a French flutist and composer, as well as a founding professor at the Paris Conservatory, which was established in 1795. During his lifetime, Devienne composed over 300 works, most of which were scored for Wind Instruments.

Devienne belonged to a line of French flutists and composers who, over a period of a century, had adopted a German transverse Flute and made it a quintessentially French musical instrument. He followed the path of predecessors such as Michel de la Barre and Michel Blavet in establishing a French school of Flute playing and composition.

Devienne wrotehundreds of works for the Flute, as well as a renowned tuition manual. His 7th Concerto is thought by many to be the best of the dozen or more concertos that he composed during his lifetime. This concerto was composed in or around 1787, shortly before the French revolution. As in Mozart's later works, the passions of the time can be clearly heard - particularly in the vigorous opening theme in E minor. In contrast to the stately Allegro, the theme is gentle and lyrical, yet intriguing, with the Flute almost mimicking bird call.

Already during his lifetime Rossler-Rosetti enjoyed great popularity. His operas and symphonies achieved great success, most of them appeared in printing. His Requiem was first performed at Prague at a memorial festival dedicated to Mozart. He composed several concertos for piano, violin, violoncello, flute, clarinet, bassoon, corno and various ensembles. Out of his 14 flute concertos the here published Concerto in D major is to be found on page 25 of the thematic catalogue Breitkopf supplement XII (1778). The contemporary handwritten orchestral parts of the work are preserved at the King Stephen Museum at Szekesfehervar. It got into the possession of the Museum in 1951 with therich book- and music-collection of the family Verebi-Vegh.

Rossler-Rosetti genoss noch bei Lebzeiten grosse Popularitat. Seine Opern und Sinfonien erzielten grossen Erfolg, ein beideutender Teil davon ist auch im Druck erschienen. Sein Requiem wurde in Prag 1792 anlasslich der Mozart-Gedenkfeierlichkeit aufgefuhrt. Er komponierte viele Konzerte fur Klavier, Violine, Violoncello, Flote, Klarinette, Fagott, Horn und verschiedene Ensembles. Von seinen vierzehn Flotenkonzerten ist das hier erscheinende D-Dur Konzert in Breitkopfs thematischem Katalog Supplement XII (1778) auf Seite 25 erwahnt. Das Werk wird im zeitgenossischen Manuskript der Orchesterstimmen im Istvan Kiraly (Konig Stephan) Museum zu Szekesfehervar aufbewahrt,wohin es 1951 mit der reichen Bucher- und Notensammlung der Familie Vegh von Vereb gelangte.

Illuminations - Capriccio For Flute And Orchestra was composed by Erik Norby in 1977. Programme Note: The title should rightly be pronounced in French (same spelling), as the piece was composed for and is dedicated to French flute virtuoso Jean-Pierre Rampal, who premiered ILLUMINATIONS in connection withhimreceiving the Danish Sonnings Musikpris in 1978. The title reflects my endeavour to create different illuminative effects in sound, for which the flute is an excellent medium, with its apparent ability to transform light phenomena into musical shapes. Tue music in ILLUMINATIONS sometimes sounds like glittering reflections, sometimes like a roaring bonfire. The absence of ordinaryflutes in the orchestra further enables the soloist to shine above a darker orchestral background. Several motives and shapes are illuminated along the way, and the music progresses in kaleidoscopic pattems of prismatic refractions. Erik Norby.
