Le Merle Noir written in 1952 by Olivier Messiaen is a chamber work for Flute and Piano that lasts 5 minutes and is one of the most remarkable pieces of the Flute repertoire. Based on the study of bird songs this piece is very technical and challenging with many details to focus on and would therefore be a fit for advanced students.Le Merle Noir is divided into five sections not officially written and mixed tonal and atonal parts. Each of the section is different to the ones surrounding them and the piece also contains a few Flute solos. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a Frenchorganist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composer of his century. Inspired by Japanese music he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity its diatonic aspect its harmony with limited transposition its colour and its additive rhythms. M. A. Reichert (1830-1880) performer composer and teacher is a household name with most flautists. He is known chiefly for his studies which integrate melody and harmony. This makes them more appealing to players and far easier to focus on than more mechanical exercises. The majority of Reichert's other compositions are less well known. Yet they are proof of his extraordinary virtuosity his imagination and his ability to express genuine emotion in his pieces. In order to cater for the rapidly growing interest in 19th-century flute music Schott has decided to re-publish these works for flute and piano.

Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) was a great organist who did not only focus on Organ composition. From orchestra pieces to chamber music he wrote various different compositions including Suite for Flute and Piano Op. 34 which was composed for Paul Taffanel. This suite a subtle mix of Romanticism and Classicism particularly stands out for its nuances and is composed of four movements: - Moderato - Scherzo - Romance - Final Charles-Marie Widor also composed 10 symphonies for Organ some Operas and some Piano Concerti.

The music of small forms and of chamber-music instrumentations was to become the focus of the French composer Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924). In 1874, after many years spent in the provinces, the teacher of Camille Saint-Saëns took the position of organist in Paris; later he not only worked as a church musician but also as a teacher. In the summer of 1887 Fauré wrote his Pavane opus 50, originally intended for a concert providing light entertainment, which soon gained wide popularity as an orchestral setting without and with the chorus added by Fauré. The romantic, slightly melancholy melody is a catchy tune which, thanks to the present arrangement, can now also be performed soloistically with piano accompaniment.
