The solo flute here is kept in high profile by the absence from the orchestra not only of other flutes, but also of violins and oboes; in addition, the trumpets are used sparingly (they do not, for instance, play in the slow movement), so that for much of the time the flute is playing against a mellow ensemble of clarinets, horns, bassoons and low strings. If this is, nevertheless, one of Davies's most open-spirited pieces, that comes partly from the ready flights of the soloist, partly from its glockenspiel accompaniments in the outer movements (replaced by ticking claves in the Adagio), partly from the dancing character of so much of the music, and partly from the harmonic clarity, in a light region not far from C minor. The sensation of an unsteady grace in 5/8 time arrives with a piano ostinato. The melody is expressive, yet insecure and unbalanced due to changing meters. The theme itself is very resolute; it is order appearing from the pandemonium. Conflict returns, and order and chaos become less distinguishable from one another, and soon fuse together. However, order returns with new meaning, synthesized with previous musical content, creating a truer, deeper sense of awareness or understanding. A moment of ambiguity arises, but the flute persists, supported by the sensitive but firm figuration in the piano, and resoundingly comes to a close, unburdened and at ease.

Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754-1812) was a popular, very creative composer of his age. His oeuvre consists of nine operas, sixty-six symphonies, forty-two string quartets, eighteen string trios, eleven piano trios, five piano quintets, serenades and ecclesiastical works. He composed especially numerous chamber music works for flute in various arrangements (duets, trios, quartets, quintets etc.). Out of his twenty-four flute concertos the one hereby published is marked No. 18 in the catalogue of Hoffmesiter's works, published in 1800. (A copy of that catalogue has been preserved at the Belgian Royal Library, Brussels.) The contemporary handwritten orchestral part-material ofthe concerto is to be found at the King Stephen Museum at Szekesfehervar, it had got there in 1951 as part of the music collection of the family Verebi-Vegh. In the 19th century nationalist themes came into fashion. Composers drew on songs and dances from their native lands, working them into paraphrased adaptations, potpourri arrangements and sets of variations or incorporating folk elements from various cultures in their compositions. Flautist Wilhelm Popp (1828-1902), who wrote music for his instrument at every level of difficulty, also took up this popular trend. In this collection seven of his easily playablecompositions have been chosen with musical links to different European countries. Here again Popp shows his ability to distil the essence from musical styles and fashions of his time, setting lyrical and virtuoso passages so well for the instrument that their effectiveness far outweighs any difficulties. The popularity of his pieces for tuition purposes, school concerts or youth music competitions remains undiminished to this day. This edition is essentially based on the first printed versions of these pieces - with just a small number of printing errors and inconsistencies corrected without comment.

This edition of the 28 variations on the aria Ich schlief, da traumte mir for flute and bassa continuo by Johann Joachim Quantz, published here for the first time, is based on a manuscript in the Preussischen Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, whose title reads: Solo Traverso cole Basso Achtundzwantzig Variation es uber die Arie Ich schlief da traumte mir del Sigr: Qvanz The high degree which the art of flute playing had reached at that time is very clearly displayed in this set of variations, a form unusual in Quantz's output. For this reason, this work is very suitable as a study as weil as for performance. The realization of the figured bass and the indications of phrasing merely represent one of many possibilities, and are only intended as suggestions. Thus my pieces Umbra, Mythos, Resonance and Moments Musicaux, for all their disparity, form a group of works in that they are based on a common Klanggestalt, a 34-note melodic-harmonic structure from whose formal basis the overall shape of the piece is derived by projection. I have called the method 'Gestalt composition', Thus there are 12 clearly differentiated formal characters or motives, which appear frequently in irregular sequence and are variously interconnected. Joseph Schubert, born in Warnsdorf (Bohemia) in 1757, is related neither to his famous namesake, Franz Schubert, nor to the well-known musical family of Dresden (Davis, Franz Anton, Franz and Georgine Schubert). He received his first musical instruction from his father, a curator by profession. Then, after moving to Prague and Berlin, he developed his knowledge of violin and viola playing, as well as of composition. In 1779 he entered the service of the Markgraf of Schwerin as a viola player. He lived in Dresden from 1788, where he died on 28 July 1837, at the age of 80. In Gerber's volume Historisch-biographisches Laxicon der Tonkunstler (Leipzig 1790/92) his work in highly esteemed. Among his most important works are four operas, masses, piano works, chamber music and concertos. Gerber knew of over forty-nine concertos. Among his published works the designation opus 1 was given to two works; a set of three violin dous and the present concerto for flute and orchestra.
