Strathclyde Concerto No. 6 (Flute Part)-The solo flute here is kept in high profile by the absence from the orchestra not only of other flutes but also of violins and oboes; in addition the trumpets are used sparingly (they do not for instance play in the slowmovement) so that for much of the time the flute is playing against a mellow ensemble of clarinets horns bassoons and low strings. Composed after a tune by Mozart and scored for the Flute this piece features a main theme and a total of seven variations which follow one another. The Flute score features many trills especially in the Variation 2 some fast rhythms and up to 6 flats on the key for the Variation 4.
