“Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the instrument's repertoire, Ballade being no exception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra, he was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed, including his famous Ballade which premiered in 1927. Addressing many technical features including flourishing semiquaver passages and a wide range, Ballade is a challenging yet riveting and stirring piece for aspiring flautists.â€.

This dreamlike and evocative piece from Peter Maxwell Davies was originally composed for Flute and orchesta. Here it is presented as Flute with Piano reduction and still captures the wonder and sanctuary of the composer's home, surrounded by seabirds and seals that fire the imagination in childlike ways, evoking images of mermaids and angels. The Flute solo is both tranquil and highly virtuosic and is well supported by the Piano accompaniment. The piece was first performed in May 1999 at the Royal Concert Hall, Dublin.

Performance pieces for piano and flute in which the level of difficulty for both players is similar are always in demand. The 20 pieces in this book — arrangements of well-known tunes as well as original compositions — are aimed at pupils who have been playing for approximately three years. Both players will learn a great deal and will have double the playing fun. Two is a Team — after all playing together is almost always at the heart of music! Two is a Team — denn schließlich geht es beim Musizieren doch fast immer um das gemeinsame Musikerlebnis!

François Devienne (1759 - 1803) was a French flutist and composer, as well as a founding professor at the Paris Conservatory, which was established in 1795. During his lifetime, Devienne composed over 300 works, most of which were scored for Wind Instruments.
Devienne belonged to a line of French flutists and composers who, over a period of a century, had adopted a German transverse Flute and made it a quintessentially French musical instrument. He followed the path of predecessors such as Michel de la Barre and Michel Blavet in establishing a French school of Flute playing and composition.
Devienne wrotehundreds of works for the Flute, as well as a renowned tuition manual. His 7th Concerto is thought by many to be the best of the dozen or more concertos that he composed during his lifetime. This concerto was composed in or around 1787, shortly before the French revolution. As in Mozart's later works, the passions of the time can be clearly heard - particularly in the vigorous opening theme in E minor. In contrast to the stately Allegro, the theme is gentle and lyrical, yet intriguing, with the Flute almost mimicking bird call.

SONATA CHO-CHO-SAN(Based on themes from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly)In the spirit of the great 19th-century opera fantasies for woodwinds, Michael Webster has created a concert trio on the many great arias from Puccini's Madama Butterfly. However, as its name implies, Sonata Cho-Cho-San is not the typical virtuosic operatic potpourri. Rather, it follows the plot, resembling a sonata mirroring Puccini's use of recurring and developing themes. Webster makes the most of the winds as versatile performers - equally suited to deliver Puccini's beautiful vocal writing, and to ornament and embroider the poignant themes in symphonic style. For advanced performers._______________________________________Text from the scanned back cover:Born in 1944, Michael Webster made his New York recital debutat Town Hall in 1968 with his eminent father, Beveridge Webster, as pianist. Webster has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the 92nd Street Y, with the Tokyo, Cleveland, Muir, Ying, Enso, and Dover String Quartets, and with the festivals of Marlboro, Santa Fe, Norfolk, Chamber Music Northwest, Angel Fire, Steamboat Springs, Park City, Sitka, Kapalua, Bowdoin, Orcas Island, Skaneateles, La Musica di Asolo, Stratford, Victoria, and Domaine Forget. As soloist he has appeared with many orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra under Aaron Copland and the Boston Pops under John Williams. “Having won many prizes at the Paris Conservatoire during the 1920s-1930s, Eugène Bozza went on to conduct the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and to become Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes. As a major figure on the classical music frontline, Bozza's compositions were well-received by audiences, Evening in the Mountains for Flute and Piano being no exception. This Bozza piece for Flute is characteristically French, with lyrical and graceful melodies, displays of the beautiful, lower register of the Flute and fast, flourishing semiquaver passages, accompanied by spread chords and staccato in the Piano. As music educationalist, Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions, â€â€œhis works reveal melodic fluency, elegance of structure and a consistenly sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.â€â€œâ€.

The great talent of Cecile Chaminade (1857-1944) showed very early: At the age of 12, she published her first composition. Georges Bizet, a friend of the family, predicted her great future. After her successful debut as a pianist in Paris in 1877, she began busy concert activities as a solo pianist, chamber musician and conductor in many European countries as well as in the USA and Canada.Although many of her compositions became bestsellers during her lifetime, they are almost all missing in the concert programmes of today. Only the Concertino for flute and orchestra Op. 107 is still performed regularly. The demanding piece was written in 1902 as a competition piece at the Paris Conservatoire - initially still with piano accompaniment. The orchestral version was composed by Chaminade two years later. The piece begins with a wide melody and then turns into a virtuoso solo section which is followed by a cadenza. The piece ends with the initial theme as recapitulation and a coda.

French composer, Emile Pessard (1843-1917) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won first prize for harmony and the 1866 Prix de Rome. Andalouse contributes to his significant catalogue of compositions. As well as composing, Pessard taught a wealth of prolific students, including Maurice Ravel and Jacques Ibert. Extracted from his Opus 20, Andalouse for Flute and Piano accompaniment displays typical French romantic features, including semiquaver flourishes, use of a wide tessitura and syncopated rhythms. For all aspiring flautists seeking alternative repertoire, Pessard's Andalouse ensures an exciting performance..

When and where did Mozart write his Flute Concerto, and for whom? Was it in 1777 or 1778? In Salzburg or in Mannheim? And how much did Ferdinand Dejean actually pay for it: 96 gulden or the promised 200 gulden? Henrik Wiese sheds new light into the confusion wrought by Mozart himself. Wiese, solo flutist of the Bavarian State Orchestra, has made an outstanding name for himself as soloist and editor, and is viewed in professional circles as one of the best specialists of Mozart's wind works. He has focused on the work's genesis, but especially on the music text, having consulted all known scribal copies of the work and all available copies of the first edition. The version for flute and piano also contains a facsimile of the solo part from the first edition as well as cadenzas which stem from the earliest hand-written sources or which were composed by the editor in Mozart's style. When and where did Mozart write his Flute Concerto, and for whom?
