Chen Yi describes the main theme as evocative of the ornamented pentatonic style often found in Cantonese folk songs, with a gentle piano texture supporting the flute’s melody.
The original version of Fisherman’s Song was written for Violin and Piano in 1980. The pentatonic melody represented in the beginning (on Violin) and the ending part (on Piano, with supporting lines on Violin) is in a singable Cantonese folk song style. The middle contrasting section is more active and energetic, with momentum brought to a climax before the recap.The work was adapted for Flute and Piano in 2022.
