Par VIA KELLY. This Meditation on 'Abide With Me' by Kelly Via was written for the West Michigan Flute Orchestra, under the direction of Julie Sooy. Although originally conceived just prior to the pandemic in early 2020, the melody and words became even more important as our daily lives began to change with the spread of the virus around the world. As the son of a minister, traditional hymns were a big part of the composer's life. There are many versions of Ave Maria in the world and it is very risky to compete with Schubert, Bach or Caccini (Vavilov). I did not begin to compose another aria, but composed a polyphonic version, in which the intertwining voices, harmony, unusual rhythm changes and a wide palette of shades play the main role.
