Filled with the intrigue and drama characteristic of all the classic Indiana Jones films, Harrison Ford once again reprised his role as our adventerous hero. This book includes selections from that film arranged for French Horn with a fully orchestrated CD accompaniment. The piece thus remained unpublished until 1973. For the new Urtext edition by G. Henle Publishers the original autograph manuscript held at the Munich Public Library was able to be examined directly. The Andante is of only moderate difficulty and is ideally suited for teaching purposes and as aneffective Romantic performance piece. Timeless Cornish Melodies-As I sit myself down to write this brief foreword I ask myself can there be music more stirring than these old Cornish folk melodies? Though not Cornish myself (I confess to being born a little further up the road in Bristol) I feel I have spent sufficient time in these 'ere parts to resonate with the sturdy brass band tradition that continues to permeate this incomparably beautiful rugged county. One can almost detect a French 'accent' when listening to the piano music of Debussy and likewise speaking as a lapsed brass player there is undoubtedly something of the Cornish twang about Trelawny when played on a cornet or euphonium. Then again one gets a different yetentirely convincing effect upon hearing these melodies rendered on woodwind instruments; hence with a little gamesmanship on my part I am pleased to see my collection of these fifteen delectable ditties come to fruition in the form of arrangements for treble clef brass instruments (in B flat and E flat) trombone and tuba (bass clef) horn in F flute clarinet and bassoon.While many will find themselves humming the likes of Going up Camborne Hill Lamorna or The Helston Furry Dance even before they have turned to the first page - for these are indelibly intertwined with Cornish culture I wonder if I might draw your attention to The Cornish Squire The Pool of Pilate and Cold Blows the Wind Today Sweetheart which are quite simply sublime melodies perhaps needing that extra bit of help in bringing them to mind nowadays. In the best tradition of musical hand-me-downs Cornish folk music works equally ideally sung and played and only by doing so on a regular basis can such traditions hope to continue forward with vigour and authority. A legitimate way of achieving this is to revitalise the harmonic scheme of these ancient tunes and bring them up to date for a modern audience; after all it was such an approach that fuelled the imagination of Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams in decades past while skilfully paying homage to the

Composed for upper-beginners  Berceuse Op.19 is a piece for F Horn and Piano accompaniment by J. M. Damase. Quite short this piece is quite easy with a difficulty level 3°. Really nice and peaceful this piece is perfect to enjoy playing music aside from all the exercises and études necessary for beginners. The Horn begins “Andante” with a theme in seven measures accompanied by chords on the Piano. A really melodious part then features until the end of the piece when the initial themes are played again a Tempo. J. M. Damaseis a French musician and a great composer who wrotenumerous lyrical works and some chamber music. One of his most famous pieces is the Sonata for Flute and Harp.

This second book of solos is a direct continuation of the first. It takes students to a point where they can begin to tackle the standard sonata and concerto repertoire. The book is designed to cover many of the technical problems encountered by the intermediate horn player and later pieces introduce important techniques such as hand-stopping and the bass clef. As with book one many pieces are originally associated with the horn and notes at the back of the book give background information and tips for interpretation. To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments. He composed seven works for Horn with En Irlande premiering in 1951. Featuring on both the ABRSM and Trinity grade 6 syllabus En Irlande is dedicated to Monsieur Leferme a Professor at the Conservatoire National de Valenciennes where Bozza was Principal for much of his working life. As the title suggests En Irlande is influenced by the country Ireland and is based on an old Irish melody. During this Bozza work for Horn contrasting sections changes in time and keysignatures variations in dynamics and articulation and the use of extended techniques are heard. Being such a versatile piece En Irlande is an exciting addition to the Horn player's repertoire.

Floraison is a terrific 1975 composition by John McCabe from The Goddess Triloigy for Horn in F and Piano accompaniment. Floraison translates as 'flowering' or 'blossoming' and this piece depicts the flower maiden and love goddess Blodeuwedd ('bloom maiden') who is also an owl goddess. She was made up of nine kinds of flowers and in one pagan ritual her husband was sacrificed ascending after death into the skies in the form of an eagle. This composition is cast in the form of a passacaglia in which there are nine variations but perhaps more important than this is the initial image behind the piece which was that of a flower graduallyopening and then closing. This image governs the shape of the music with its increasingly elaborate and intense growth towards its climax and then a return at the close to the opening ideas.

The scoring of Schubert's Auf dem Strom (On the River) for voice, horn and piano is reminiscent of that of the Hirt auf dem Felsen (Shepherd on the Rock, HN 969) with obligato clarinet. Both pieces were written in 1828 and each one upon a musician's request - in this case that of the horn player Rudolf Lewy. Schubert gave the first performance of Auf dem Strom with the latter and the tenor Ludwig Tietze on 26 March 1828 in Vienna. It was such a success that it was soon performed again, and the press raved about it being an 'indescribable treat for the ears?. The title of this piece comes from 'Celtic Cross' by Norman MacCaig, a poem that brings to life the symbols of an earlier time, carved in stone, entwined and plaited in abstract forms. The idea of a coiling serpent and the image of the coiled horn also came together in my mind. The opening phrase of the piece is responsible for much of the musical material for the whole piece, a strong and vibrant phrase that I wanted to capture something of the essence of these noble creatures on Celtic crosses.
