Urtext. Par SCHUMANN CLARA. Schumann's horn sonatas were composed in 1936/37. Considering the slim repertoire offered horn players from this period, it is more than surprising that these two masterpieces could have slumbered for so long. Both sonatas are similar in structure, with op. 118 being one Schumann's few three-movement sonatas. The first movements of the pieces sparkle with melancholically lyrical melodies, whereas passages strongly marked rhythmically, variously shape the two outer movements. Virtuoso moments can be found, respectively, in the final movements, bringing the works to a brilliant close. The horn parts predominantly range within the full, sonorous middle register, where occasional 'outbursts” up to the notated a flat'' are also not lacking. The clever handling of the balance of sounds, the possibilities on the early valve horn as well as the inner interweaving of themes differentiating horn and piano make the sonatas an exceedingly vivid testimony to Schumann's mature compositional art. Timeless Cornish Melodies-As I sit myself down to write this brief foreword I ask myself can there be music more stirring than these old Cornish folk melodies? Though not Cornish myself (I confess to being born a little further up the road in Bristol) I feel I have spent sufficient time in these 'ere parts to resonate with the sturdy brass band tradition that continues to permeate this incomparably beautiful rugged county. One can almost detect a French 'accent' when listening to the piano music of Debussy and likewise speaking as a lapsed brass player there is undoubtedly something of the Cornish twang about Trelawny when played on a cornet or euphonium. Then again one gets a different yetentirely convincing effect upon hearing these melodies rendered on woodwind instruments; hence with a little gamesmanship on my part I am pleased to see my collection of these fifteen delectable ditties come to fruition in the form of arrangements for treble clef brass instruments (in B flat and E flat) trombone and tuba (bass clef) horn in F flute clarinet and bassoon.While many will find themselves humming the likes of Going up Camborne Hill Lamorna or The Helston Furry Dance even before they have turned to the first page - for these are indelibly intertwined with Cornish culture I wonder if I might draw your attention to The Cornish Squire The Pool of Pilate and Cold Blows the Wind Today Sweetheart which are quite simply sublime melodies perhaps needing that extra bit of help in bringing them to mind nowadays. In the best tradition of musical hand-me-downs Cornish folk music works equally ideally sung and played and only by doing so on a regular basis can such traditions hope to continue forward with vigour and authority. A legitimate way of achieving this is to revitalise the harmonic scheme of these ancient tunes and bring them up to date for a modern audience; after all it was such an approach that fuelled the imagination of Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams in decades past while skilfully paying homage to the

Mozart’s final year was a difficult one as his employment was precarious his financial situation usually quite desperate and his wife Constanze frequently in ill health and at the spa in Baden near Vienna for treatments. On one such occasion in June of 1791 Mozart visited her and while there composed a short sacramental anthem for his friend Anton Stoll organist and choirmaster of the Baden parish church. The exquisite Ave verum corpus (K.618) was the first piece of sacred music he had written in over eight years (and the last before his unfinished Requiem) and has proven to be one of his most beloved compositions. Within six months of its writing Mozart himself hadfallen seriously ill and died in December of that year.

Depuis longtemps l'idée - la nécessité plutôt - d'en finir avec les belles architectures victorieuses, les solides métaphores, le confort du déjà connu, pour imaginer les conditions d'une musique sinon inimaginable, du moins, moins 'calibrée'. Ce morceau représente la première pièce d'un cycle que je me refuse donc à planifier comme tel, tant le sujet est par ailleurs rétif aux outils de la raison. Les larmes - en allemand : Tränen (NdE) nous concernent tous sans exception. Elles matérialisent l'expression de nombre de nos sentiments. Nous les produisons nous-mêmes, avec nos propres corps et elles nous déterminent dans notre fragilité, ou plus exactement dans ce que nous acceptons d'en montrer. Il s'agira donc plutôt d'une chronique en forme de dérive, sans plan et sans fondations, mêlant distanciation poétique, observation presque physiologique, dialogues et même autobiographie. On me dira qu'il est étrange pour un compositeur mâle (ou supposé tel) de se pencher ainsi sur un sujet si traditionnellement féminin. On m'a appris tout petit qu'un homme ne pleure pas - une faille de plus dans mon éducation: je pleure très facilement et pour toutes sortes de raisons. Difficulté de rester dans le sujet, et de ne pas glisser vers ses conséquences: ne pas parler de pleureuses, donc, mais songer à des 'larmes professionnelles' - et surtout ne pas s'appesantir sur les larmes de tristesse: je leur préfère celles produites par le rire, ou celles, fluides entre toutes, émanant de la joie de retrouver enfin un être cher. Le chant - en allemand : Gesang (NdE) promis par le dernier élément du titre est un chant 'en négatif'. Il m'est personnellement très difficile, très périlleux de parler en pleurant. Les larmes sont plus fortes que le discours et imposent leur propre rythme à la voix. Le parler devient alors, à travers les larmes, un chant étrange, involontaire: le timbre de la voix se modifie, son souffle se dévoile sous un jour inhabituellement sensuel, la scansion du verbe est comme conditionnée par le mètre des larmes, faisant intervenir de courts silences, le discours lui-même se prête plus volontiers à des redites, comme des refrains compulsifs. Il s'agirait donc d'une musique purement mélodique, dont la ligne n'existerait en tant que telle qu'à travers une collection de brisures, de trous d'air, de vexations - une musique dépourvue de masque.
