Par OKAZAKI MILES. This book is designed to be useful for guitarists at any skill level. Beginners can use it as an introduction to the foundational concepts of the instrument, intermediate players can use it for training and theoretical work, and advanced players can explore the sections on advanced theory, extended technique and the exhaustive tables of melodic and rhythmic possibilities. It is divided into two parts: pitch and rhythm. Part 1 (pitch) begins with the properties of string, harmonics, and tuning systems. It then moves methodically through pitch information, beginning with locating all versions of a single pitch, building pentatonic, heptatonic, and all possible symmetrical scales. This is followed by a study of intervals, with all possible locations of every two pitches, and a long study that moves through every possible fingering of three pitches, with a series of exercises to master triadic syntax. Part 1 closes with a study of four-pitch structures and complete tables that show all possible pitch sets in circular visual notation. Part 2 (rhythm) begins with a complete course in 'Symmetrical Picking, ' a method based on drum rudiments that builds control in the picking hand through an exhaustive variety of movements. The focus of this section is building a strong rhythmic foundation, with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, speed, dynamics, and groove. It is followed by a study of legato playing, working with ornaments and slides. The study of playing with fingers on multiple strings takes up the remainder of the book. This begins with the study of pulse against pulse, playing two simultaneous tempos. The book concludes with a study of polyrhythm, playing one rhythm against another. Plain English is used as much as possible to describe theoretical concepts, and hundreds of illustrations were made for the book as an aid to those who either don't speak English or prefer to think visually. This approach is designed to be inclusive and to promote creative practice. The main idea of the book is described in this passage (page 154): 'Even in this small area there is a lot of material, potentially a lifetime of study. The amount of information can feel overwhelming to students at any level. For this reason, the book is designed for self-directed practice, with an emphasis on what the player 'could' do, rather than what the player 'should' do. The principle is to develop your own learning process, rather than following someone else's. The ability to make choices is essential in finding a personal approach to the instrument. Pick and choose the studies that seem interesting - there should be enough variety to accommodate a wide range of personalities. If any particular concept or exercise has been useful as the starting point for a new creative direction, then the book has done its job. Its purpose is not to push any dogma, method, or style, but to open the door to options for guitarists of any background that are looking for new perspectives. Guitarist educator and historian Stefan Grossman was a student of acoustic blues and gospel singer/guitarist Rev. Gary Davis. Beginning when he was 15 Stefan studied with Davis on weekends spending eight to ten hours at his house in Harlem absorbing all he could. While studying with Rev. Davis he met and studied with other country blues guitarists: Mississippi John Hurt Son House Skip James Mance Lipscomb and Fred McDowell. In the early 1960s Stefan formed the Even Dozen Jug Band (which also included such future luminaries as John Sebastian Steve Katz Maria Muldaur and David Grisman). In 1966 he worked with the alternate rock band the Fugs beforemoving to Great Britain in 1967. In 1969 he co-founded Kicking Mule Records with Ed Denson a label that showcased acoustic fingerstyle guitar. Many of these albums that Stefan produced during this period are finally being re-released on CD on his own label. From 1967 to 1987 Stefan Grossman lived in Great Britain and Italy and toured worldwide. He performed and recorded with John Renbourn for 15 years and they produced four albums together.Stefan's solo discography goes all the way back to 1966 when he recorded How to Play Blues Guitar with Rory Block (now released as Country Blues Guitar SGGW103). Since that time he has recorded over 30 solo albums and has written numerous books highlighting the playing of legendary bluesmen from the 1920s and 1930s.Nowadays Stefan divides his time between the USA and England. He continues to do concerts and workshops worldwide and remains one of the world's foremost authorities on acoustic blues guitar. The Guitar Artistry of Stefan Grossman brings together performances from 1965 to today. He performs solo with the Even Dozen Jog Band with John Renbourn as well as Duck Baker. In between the music Stefan weaves together the story behind his playing. An 87 page PDF booklet is included on the DVD. This details

Favorite 50 American Traditional Fiddle Tunes For Flatpicking Guitar Vol. 1: A-F...
(+)
Favorite 50 American Traditional Fiddle Tunes For Flatpicking Guitar Vol. 1: A-F-This collection of fiddle tunes originally appeared in 'Kaufman's Collection of American Fiddle Tunes for Flatpicking Guitar (MB 95748). Steve Kaufman says he can't emphasize enough the importance of developinga large repertoire of tunes. Fiddle tunes give us melodies that eventually allow us to begin to improvise. Sometimes without even knowing it. The more tunes you know the more melodies and intersecting melody lines you know. Thisallows you to eventually cut and paste portions of the melody line into another song. In the beginning you will probably unknowingly replace and ending run. These are the last two measures of the section of a tune. Many of them inthe same key are interchangeable unless they are specific to the melody of the song. After a while you will cut out measures in the middle of the song and then you will be able to take the snips of melodies and play them inanother song in a different key thus beginning to improvise. All of this is possible because you built up your repertoire of tunes. Includes access to online audio.

The primary aim of this book is to help the reader to understand the language of music and how it works in relation to the guitar. It is not intended as a substitute for all other lines of study but it will provide a basicknowledge that can be expanded and developed. The reader is urged to read as wide a range of books as possible and to examine whatever music he or she possesses to identify further examples of the points discussed. The examplesshould be played and carefully listened to. The study of music is sterile if confined to making marks on paper no matter how well understood intellectually; no real value attaches to a theoretical study of music unless it isdirectly related to aural experience and its value is reduced further if it is not related to the music of one's instrument. Kachian Chris - Composer's Desk Reference For The Classic Guitar - Guitar

(+)
Media Type : Book Level : Beginning-Intermediate Musical Genre : Classic Number of pages : 76 Traditionally the classic guitar has been either excluded or inadequately represented in orchestration textbooks, resulting in much misinformation about its technique, its practicality in various performance contexts, and its character. The guitar's unique tuning, broad timbral variety and intimate nature pose a formidable challenge to non-guitarist composers, for whom an extensive amount of time would be required to gain even a minimal hands-on acquaintance. For most composers this is an unrealistic expectation, leading to time-consuming consultations and extensive drafting or rewriting. The purpose of this book is to provide the non-guitarist composer with the fundamental tools needed to write idiomatically for the guitar. The first of its kind for the guitar, the reference was written in consultation with dozens of composers and conceived with three types of end users in mind: - Experienced composers with a concern for writing idiomatically for the guitar. - Guitarists who are commissioning a work from a composer who has never written for the instrument. - Libraries that wish to add this essential sourcebook to their music reference section. The very structure of the book reflects the composer's own intuition by addressing such questions as: - How is the guitar constructed? - What does successful guitar music look like? - How is the guitar played? - How does the guitarist interpret music and express emotion? - Which musical elements and gestures are most effective? - How do these elements combine to create an effective pacing of idioms? By examining the parameters of successfully written pieces, The Composer's Desk Reference for the Classic Guitar provides an expedient resource of ideas and illustrations contributing to the fluency of both first-time and seasoned guitar composers.

(+)
The product of a 14 year research project this book contains over 350 studies to thoroughly train the right hand of classical guitarists in the use of all five fingers - adding the little finger to the present four fingertechnique. These studies build a five-finger technique in the playing of chords arpeggios tremolos and harmonics beginning with the thumb and one-finger combinations and increasing in complexity to the thumb and four fingers. The studies are played over easy yet interesting left hand progressions up and down the fingerboard. Postlewate demonstrates how to develop your own right hand studies by including examples from standard classical guitarrepertoire pieces by Fernando Sor Federico Moreno Torroba and Heitor Villa-Lobos at the end of the book. This book is a companion to MB 98711 - HOMAGE TO VILLA-LOBOS and other compositions (music composed transcribed arrangedand edited by Charles Postlewate for the guitar using five fingers of the right hand) and its accompanying 60-minute CD HOMAGE TO VILLA-LOBOS (MB 98711CD).

(+)
Arranged For Classical Guitar-This anthology contains nineteen of the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan classics arranged in easily sight-readable versions for beginning to intermediate classical guitarists. All the favorites are here ranging fromsentimental ballads such as Little Buttercup Willow Tit-Willow and There Grew a Little Flower to more up-tempo 'patter' type pieces such as Oh! A Private Buffoon Kind Sir You Cannot Have theHeart and A Policeman's Lot. The aim has been to provide both a useful teaching resource and a light-hearted alternative to the more 'serious' music of the Classical Guitar repertoire. All the pieces lendthemselves extremely well to the common idiomatic textures of the Classical Guitar. A variety of melody and accompaniment styles are employed including block chords arpeggio patterns and passages of double-stopped thirdsand sixths. A number of the pieces are in easy first position format while others explore the common higher positions. The standard Guitar keys are utilized (C G D A E) but there are occasional more challengingtemporary modulations to 'difficult' keys such as E flat major. There are also instances of drop-D tuning which is often required in Classical Guitar playing.

The study of music is sterile if confined to making marks on paper, no matter how well understood intellectually; no real value attaches to a theoretical study of music unless it is directly related to aural experience and its value is reduced further if it is not related to the music of one's instrument. Contents include Musical Sounds and Their Origins, The Organization of single notes, Melody, Intervals, The Beginning of Harmony-Triads, Functional Harmony and Cadences, Primary Harmony and Cadences, Primary Triads and Substitution, Modulation and Transition, Secondary Sevenths, Other Diatonic Secondary Sevenths, The Cadential Six-four, the Dominant Ninth, Secondary Ninths, Chords of the Eleventh and Thirteenth, Chromatic Alteration of Diatonic Chords, chromatic Harmony, Remote Modulation, Pedal Points, and Steps Beyond

(+)
This book is designed to teach the guitarist the technique of 'chord soloing.' This technique is extremely valuable to all guitarists because chords and melodies are played together; there is no need for an accompanyinginstrument. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of chord soloing. I would recommend that novice guitarists start at the beginning and work through the book slowly. Intermediate players may want to find a chapter thatlooks challenging and start at that point. By the end of this book you will be able to take any lead sheet and turn it into a guitar arrangement. Enjoy the journey into the fascinating world of chord soloing.
