See the biography of Michael Karmon on the back cover.WHEN THE SHEEP WON'T COME: A SLEEPLESS NOCTURNE FOR GUITAR was composed for Joseph Hagedorn, winner of the 1990 GFA solo competition, and premiered by him in November 1999. My original idea was to write a serene and moody nocturne in several movements. However, as I began researching and listening to new guitar pieces, I came across Toru Takemitsu's All in Twilight, and it immediately made a profound impression. At the time I found it beautiful, moving, and inspiring, but I also felt I didn't have anything to add to what Takemitsu already did, and that I needed to find a new concept for my piece. So, I decided to view night as a potentially restless time, rather than a serene time, and portray states of mind one might go through during a sleepless night. The names of the movements evoke, at least in my mind, the moods I am to depict, and the piece becomes progressively more convoluted as it goes on. By the end, the music is a surreal and weary shadow of the opening.

Inch....this work is likely to become a standart work very quickly and is to be recommended to all schools where recorder studies are undertaken inch. (Oliver James,Contact Magazine) A novel and comprehensive approach to transferring from the C to F instrument. 430 music examples include folk and national songs (some in two parts), country dance tunes and excerpts from the standard treble repertoire ofBach, Barsanti, Corelli, Handel, Telemann, etc. An outstanding feature of the book has proved to be Brian Bonsor's brilliantly simple but highly effective practice circles and recognition squares designed to give, in only a few minutes, concentrated practice on the more usual leaps to and from each new note and instant recognition of random notes. Quickly emulating the outstanding success of the descant tutors, these books are very popular even with those who normally use tutors other than the Enjoy the Recorder series.

Harri Vuori's Chiroptera (2017) for guitar embraces the instrument with several compositional solutions born from the attributes of the guitar. Dedicated to Patrik Kleemola this 12 minutes work is devided in three movements. The textures of Chiroptera are complex but their build-up, fade-out, measuring and timing of these changes is clearly defined and understandable. According to the composer the name Chiroptera has the same beautiful sound as the composition in whole. In addition he currently lives in an area populated with lots of bats both in the woods and in the atticks. Harri Vuori (b. 1957) studied composition with Paavo Heininen, Eero Hameenniemi and Einojuhani Rautavaara at the Sibelius Academy. He has been composer in residence of the Hyvinkaa Orchestra since 1997 and has taught in the Department of Musicology at the University of Helsinki since 1993. HIs guitar concerto Ctulhu's Dreams (2016) based on the Ctulhu mythology by H.P. Lovecraft was commissioned by the Lappeenranta City Orchestra and premiered in 2016.

Mikko Heinio (b. 1948) composed his Sonata for Guitar (2019) the instrument in his lap. The inspiring cooperation with the guitarist Patrik Kleemola can be heard throughout the four-movement sonata. The first (Intro) and last (Coda) have the same tempo but the former is kaleidoscopic and the latter an unbroken ribbon. Correspondingly, the second (Rubato) movement is fragmentary, while the third (Rondo) has a leisurely blues beat. The Rubato is coloured by crotchet steps produced by plucking between the nut and the left hand, and the Rondo is marked by slide glissandos. The overall duration is c. 14 minutes.

With its 50 Blues rhythms inspired by the biggest hits of the greatest guitarists of all time (Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, Albert Collins, B.B. King, T-Bone Walker etc.), this tutorial will keep you pleasantly busy for quite a while. But there’s more to it than that! Besides affording pleasure, these rhythms allow you to discover and study the tools required for a good Blues accompaniment: triads, double stops, single notes, bends, barre chords, slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs, rest strokes, binary and shuffle rhythms, etc. All this is included in the guidelines given to you in the preliminary chapter –guidelines regarding the structure, the rhythm, as well as the chords employed. The DVD attached to the tutorial offers you the possibility to mindfully observe all 50 rhythms – first at actual playing speed, then at a slower speed. This again gives you the opportunity to closely follow the movement of the hands, to choose the right fingerings and keep a steady beat(!) For its part, the MP3 CD is composed of as many backing tracks as there are rhythms in the tutorial; the 50 backing tracks are recorded at two different tempi: the intended tempo (actual playing speed) and the rehearsal tempo (slower speed). On the backing track at actual playing speed the Guitar is only present during the first round, then it disappears, yielding the floor to you. The backing tracks provided here are of an appropriate length (about 4 to 5 minutes each, which sums up to almost 7h of musical practice). This means that you have enough time at your disposal to practice under the best conditions.
