A mode is a scale in which the tonal center has been displaced. Dedicated to world renowned guitarist David Russell, Peated Waltzes is a three-movement piece that pays homage to the peated whiskies of Islay, the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The opening movement, Earthy Smoke, Sea Salt and Iodine, attempts to portray the distinctive character of the single malts of that region. Based on the Gaelic folk song The Praise of Islay (Moladh na Landaidh), the second movementâs title comes from one the songâs last verses, O, may long their wild notes flow. The third movementâs theme was extracted from the letters of Laphroaig, one of the most iconic Scotch whiskies, whose nameâs meaning inspired the title, By the Broad Bay. In the second part, the traditional Celtic melody, An Islay Pipe Reel, is quoted. J'ai combiné une mélodie italienne du XIVe siècle avec une ancienne danse campagnarde anglaise pour le deuxième mouvement, Double Dance, qui introduit les instruments à vent. Le troisième mouvement, Ballad, est ici révisé par rapport à sa version originale et inclut maintenant le thème à la clarinette avec un accompagnement obligé de guitare. Le dernier mouvement, Toccata, est rapide, mais pas aussi difficile qu'il n'en a l'air, ce qui plaira à la plupart des interprètes !The first movement, Aeolian Chant, is based on a theme by a friend of mine, (not a musician!) and is developed with some other ideas in a semi-improvisatory style and features only strings. I combined a 14th Century Italian melody with an old English country dance for the second movement, Double Dance, which introduces the wind instruments. The third movement, Ballad, is here revised from its original version and now includes the theme on clarinet with guitar obbligato. The last movement, Toccata, is fast, but not as difficult as it sounds, which will appeal to most players!

Riflessioni sul nome Amedeo Modigliani (Omaggio a Oscar Ghiglia) is divided in two movements that follow each other attacca. The first movement of the piece is named by the composer ...Il Pittore...sta...dipingendo... (...the painter...is...painting...). At the beginning of the piece we are introduced to the main motif of which the notes are reflected (Riflessioni) from the name of Amedeo Modigliani. A fantasy of timbre created by the composer is given a versatile interpretation by the possibilities of the guitar: tone material based on an octatonic scale is developed further through the means of arpeggios, pizzicatos, glissandos and high-pitched flageolets. The music is searching for direction in imitation of a painter searching for a subject as the theme Modigliani is repeated in different registers. The second movement is called Gli ucelli...della ombra... (Birds...of twilight...).

I met for the first time the refined Finnish composer Kai Nieminen in Milan (Italy), although we had been in touch for a while before. It was that very trip which provided the inspiration for this composition dedicated to Bruno Munari, one of the most renowned XXI century Italian artists, who lived and worked in Milan. In particular, the work that inspired this composition, displayed at Museo del Novecento in Milan and characterised by swirling lines enveloping torn-out music scores, suggested the mysterious atmosphere of this piece and the subheading Un telegramma dal paese dei sogni (A telegram from dreamland). The composition can be divided into four sections and displays a wide variety of harmonics, cleverly enhancing the polyphonic resources of the guitar. The very first bars introduce the main themes of the composition: particularly, at bar 7 it is possible to recognize a Bach quote from Das wohltemperierte Clavier (II book, ndeg24) recurring frequently in the piece and appearing also in the painting. Meno mosso (bar 51) opens with a ghostly song accompanied by drum-like effects that recall the primitive sound of the shamanic Finnish drum. Fast sixteenth cascades dotted by harmonic sounds open the fourth and last section at bar 66 (Capriccioso, movendo), alluding to a mysterious telegram sent from another dimension.

These little studies are polyphonic and harmonic exercises which are very useful for the young guitarists. The modal structures give to this score a unique flavor and invite the musicians to discover an astonishing music tradition.

My Piece Tema con Variazoni is inspired by Italian Baroque Music and is based on a hymn theme that I composed myself. It's not at all difficult but sounds yet full (Martin Klaschka). Martin Klaschka (*1963) studied music at Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart. Much of his energy is devoted to writing easy to intermediate pieces for different instruments and ensembles.
