Mompou wrote the Suite compostelana (1962) in the context of his heightened professional rapport with Andrés Segovia. This is one of the most significant works written for and dedicated to Andrés Segovia; not surprisingly so, given that the Andalusian guitarist's principal characteristics were the evocative beauty and variety of his sound, in perfect accord therefore with the artistic exploration Mompou cultivated throughout his entire life.

Completed in Karstula, Finland during late July 2010, this carefully structured, but also free-ranging work is drawn from ideas for a much earlier work in four movements, Fantasy dating from the 1980s. Kai Nieminen has been for a long time an admirer of the work of artist Paul Klee (1879-1940), and the solo presented in its final form here is influenced by the painting Dances caused by Fear or as it is often refered to Dancing from Fear painted towards the end of Klee's life in Bern, 1938. Having left Germany for Switzerland in December 1933, Klee's later works were often full of signs and lines, very often represented in black, depicting human figures or various objects against a variety of coloured backgrounds, in the case of this painting of a brownish hue. This development in his painting style and technique is felt by some to be an effect perhaps of his long-term illness, systemic sclerosis, but in the case of Dances caused by Fear there is suggested an atmosphere of panic and terror, an attempt to escape from horrors to come (World War II), represented in the violent movement of the arms and legs of the figures, and the dark, indeed brooding nature of the colours. In Kai Nieminen's guitar work Images of Fear, there is only a very brief passage of calm at the very beginning, after which come three main connected sections in which a wide range of musically unsettling ideas emerge one by one, making use of the tritone, minor seconds, glissandos, tamboura, campanella, etc. The third and final section incorporates the grouping of 5 sixteenth-notes, to give an uneasy feeling to the music, with a short haunting and pleading five-note phrase (Cantando) heard immediately following this passage, before the work ends with further glissandos, and distant and diminishing harmonics. As with Kai Nieminen's other guitar works, the use of 'orchestral colour' is vital to the performance, and passages suggestive of for example brass, strings, woodwind, etc., should be taken into account and played with suitably considered contrast of tone. Work for Guitar. The composer writes: 'The title of this tiny little piece came to me out of my fascination of a picture by the French painter Jean-Francois Millet, entitled L'ANGELUS It features two praying people listening to the evening bells. My Angelus-Bells were later on squeezed into a waltz-like rhythm. The piece was written by request of and is dedicated to David Starobin.'.

Nocturnes have a long tradition - from the notturni by Mozart and Haydn via the nocturnes of the Romantic era to Chopin who elevated the genre to fascinating character piece: He created ambivalently shining gems in an unreal world of human nature which were as close to the extremely sublime as to a demonic abyss. Enjott Schneider's '3 Nocturnes', the core of each of which is characterized by a Latin motto, stand in this tradition. Cicero's 'Somnus est imago mortus' sees sleep as a resemblance of death. 'Die Zeit eilt weg, die Liebe aber bleibt' [Time passes but love remains] explores the ambivalence between that what is hurrying and that what stays eternally. Ovid's 'Der Tropfen hohlt den Stein nicht durch Kraft, sondern durch stetes Fallen' [The drop hollows the stone, not by force but by constant dripping] has its counterpart in a minimalist motif which has a lasting influence on the listener through its constant sounding.

This highly original initiative proved to have historic consequences for the emancipation of the guitar from the rather provincial milieu of aficionados in which it was confined, enabling it to emerge as a major protagonist in its own right on the international music scene. To mark the 25th anniversary of his passing (1987-2012) I asked some composers to write a piece paying tribute to Andrés Segovia. Most responded with enthusiasm and I was able to perform their tributes to Segovia in the concerts honouring the memory of the Maestro I held in 2012 â?? in venues including the Ravenna Festival, the Ateneo in Madrid, the Royal Academy of Music, London, and the Meeting in Rimini, as well as many others. In my turn I dedicate this volume, containing a selection of these pieces, to the memory of the Maestro. The volume is undoubtedly enhanced by the inclusion of two further tributes to Segovia, both produced to accompany concerts I gave in 2012: a poem by Davide Rondoni and a portrait of Segovia by Roberto Casadio.(Piero Bonaguri).

In contrast to Llobet´s output of just 14 original works, his transcriptions for guitar number 118, a considerable quantity of an extremely high standard. These were a huge influence on the two generations of guitarists following Llobet some of whom mercilessly and anonymously plundered and disfigured them for their own use! Being also an accomplished pianist, Llobet was in a better position than any other of his contemporaries to transcribe the German Romantic Masters, as well as the piano music of Albéniz and Granados, among others. Transcribed by Llobet mainly during his formative years these transcriptions are masterpieces which transcend their original setting. In his early career, Segovia played many transcriptions of Llobet, eg Bach's Prélude in Dm, Sarabande, Bourrée, Gavotte. This volume is highly recommended.

Julio Sagreras was born in Buenos Aires in 1879 into a family of Spanish origins. Both of his parents, Gaspar Sagreras and Dolores Ramirez, were guitarists. From a very young age Julio showed extraordinary musical skills that made him an admired and requested guitarist in all the musical salons of the Argentine capital. This edition differs from the previous ones not only for a new and more modern musical graphics, for the simplification of the fingerings that Sagreras pedantically repeated even in the most obvious situations, for the correction of errors, the development ofmore detailed explanations and the addition of some necessary historical and practical clarifications.

Joaquim Homs is recognised as the leading pioneer of twelve-tone composition in Spain, but the products of his long life and career were always grounded in romantic expressiveness. Homs was born in Barcelona and studied cello until 1922. Afterwards, he self-educated himself in composition and eventually studied with Roberto Gerhard from 1930 to 1936. After 1954, his connection with twelve-tone composition intensified and he moved away from traditional tonalities.

The piano played an important part in Llobet's life. He and his wife Anita Aguilar were accomplished pianists. This volume concentrates on the piano's Central European classical repertoire, which Llobet knew well. These arrangements are absolute gems, and this volume contains two unpublished works.

Mauro Giuliani's Rossiniane, published between 1821 and 1828, are a series of six musical potpourris entirely based on the music of Gioachino Rossini. The potpourri was one of the most popular instrumental genres of the early 1800s, an assembly of musical themes with different origins combined into a single composition. In the absence of the modern means of reproducing music, they had a very important function: of bringing music, most often created for the theatre, into the home. Some important points can be deduced from Giuliani's epistolary exchanges: the first is that the Rossiniane were part of his own concert repertoire: the second is that Rossini was not only aware of the project which would bear his name, but also collaborated with Giuliani in some ways, providing him with some themes expressly composed for his works. The third is that Giuliani was well aware that these pieces represented a new development for his own compositions and for the musical panorama of the time, “a hitherto-unknown style.†This edition of the Rossiniane is based on the contemporary musical sources that have come down to us. It is enhanced by some remarks on interpretation that should help towards making an accurate and coherent reading of this distinctive and original musical text.

Il grande larice rosso; Piccole vite; Requiem per un boscoNever before have I felt the urgency within myself to communicate with my instrument something which goes beyond just the notes, a desire to embrace with music parts of the world which I see as being so neglected and abandoned, as if man were no longer able to see beyond the narrow confines of his home and work spaces. The environment which surrounds us, free and pure, seems to bow more and more to the base instincts of abuse which man brings into play... the destruction of centuries-old forests and glaciers, the construction of harmful and disturbing, useless and polluting elements... and I wonder what we can do, what I, as a musician, can do, at least to show my disapproval of these situations. I have no straight answer but I know that writing the music I love to play, often born in natural and wild environments can help to dream of, or imagine a present time which is more on a human scale, thanks to the strong evocative power which music possesses and emanates. This is the meaning of these compositions, dedicated to a tree, a 700-year-old specimen of the Stura Valley, Lu Merze Gros (The Big Larch), to the small beings which inhabit it, in the bark, among its foliage, in the surrounding soil and to my sense of frustration at seeing a forest of fir trees razed to the ground to allow the construction of a bobsleigh run. This action of mine has been useless and nostalgic perhaps, but it has given me intense moments of emotion in the writing and moves me enormously during its performance.Giorgio Signorile.
