Stanley Chaloupka was the principal harpist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for 40 years. He wrote this book for composers and arrangers to ?assist them in achieving their desired harp scoring objectives and also encouragea profusion of creative logical harp scoring. Arranged for Harp-Say Something is an original song by the American duo A Great Big World. The lyrics are about letting go when a relationship ends. It became an international hit when Christina Aguilera joined A Great Big World on a re-recorded version in 2013. Sylvia Woods has made a 4-page advanced beginner to intermediate arrangement playable on either lever or pedal harp. This music features a pedal point (also called a pedal note or pedal tone) which is a sustained or continually repeated note that is held constant while harmonies change in other parts. A pedal point is usually found in the bass but here it is in the middle register. Virtually every measure includes a middle Cnote on the downbeat. Sometimes it is played with the right hand and at other times with the left. But it is almost always there. This pedal point harmony is what originally drew me into this beautiful piece of music the first time I heard it on the radio. The music is in the key of C and no sharping levers are required as there are no lever changes. Fingerings lyrics and chord symbols are included. The harp range required is 24 strings from a low C up to an E. It can be played on 24-string to 26-string harps with a C as the lowest string if you play both hands an octave higher than written.

Variations Sur Un Thème Dans Le Style Ancien by Carlos Salzedo is the third and final work of a series called “Three pieces” for solo pedal Harp. Difficult to play it is rated 8° and requires good mastering of the instrument and of its technique including the pedals. Using the full range of the instrument this work features numerous trills glissandos and accidentals among other technicalities and is divided between really fast and more quiet parts. Carlos Salzedo (1885-1961) was a French harpist and composer who wrote and transcribed numerous pieces for the Harp. He also wrote some pedagogical publications for harpists.

The ?Flower Duet? is from the 1883 opera Lakme by Leo Delibes. Normally sung by 2 women Sylvia has arranged this lovely song for solo harp. Although you may not be familiar with the title of his lyrical pieces you have probably heard it in commercials for companies such as Ghirardelli Chocolate and British Airways. The sheet music includes two 2-page versions both in the key of A (3 sharps). They are basically the same except that oneis for lever harps tuned to C and the other requires a B-flat. Fingerings are included as well as lever and pedal changes. For intermediate players. Playable on lever harps and pedal harps.

The composer writes: 'My approach to writing these works for intermediate level lever harp was to fully embrace the diatonic and/or modal properties of the lever harp and to write into the strengths of the instrument. I also wanted to create works which whilst embedded in stylistically familiar territory also open up less familiar technical and musical elements for new players. For example the ???celtic??? themed works Coire Fhionn Lochan and The Road to Kilchurn Castle are derived from very familiar elements but which challenge the players ability to deal with irregular times and juxtaposed rhythmic material and Reverie which tests the harpists ability to maintain evennesswhile controlling gradual changes of tempo and dynamic within a very familiar technical landscape. One of the other important things was to write works specifically for the lever harp (as opposed to pedal harp) especially given that so much lever harp repertoire consists of arrangements or re-arranged pedal harp music. The lever system offers many advantages over the pedal system including the opportunity to employ chromatic possibilities that would otherwise be impossible. So some of these works indulge and celebrate these idiosyncrasies. I hope you will enjoy playing them as much as I enjoyed writing them.'

For intermediate players Guitare Op.50 is a melodious piece by Alphonse Hasselmans. Composed ideally for pedal Harps this piece includes some pedal changes and some accidental alterations. Three sections can be differentiated: Allegro Moderato (3/8) Pas trop retenu (3/4) and Tempo 1 (3/8). The last part is a variation of the theme played in the Allegro Moderato section. Perfect for a recital this piece for Harp is really enjoyable to play and to listen to. Alphonse Hasselmans (1845-1912) is a Belgian-born French harpist a great composer and renowned professor. He has composed and transcribed numerousworks for the Harp. He also edited and reviewed a collection of works by Bochsa. His most famous piece is a concert piece called The Wellspring Op. 44.

This companion CD will assist harp players in learning the pieces in the 50 Christmas Carols for All Harps book. Since many will want to ?play along? as they learn Sylvia has recorded most of the pieces slowerthan they are usually played and as ?straight? as possible with little or no expression or rhythmic variations. Each piece has two arrangements: (A) an easy version and (B) one that is more difficult. On theserecordings Sylvia plays version A directly followed by version B. Since the two versions can be played as a duet you can play either version along with the recording. The companion CD includes all the pieces from the book and inthe same order.
