The composer writes: 'My approach to writing these works for intermediate level lever harp was to fully embrace the diatonic and/or modal properties of the lever harp and to write into the strengths of the instrument. I also wanted to create works which whilst embedded in stylistically familiar territory also open up less familiar technical and musical elements for new players. For example the ???celtic??? themed works Coire Fhionn Lochan and The Road to Kilchurn Castle are derived from very familiar elements but which challenge the players ability to deal with irregular times and juxtaposed rhythmic material and Reverie which tests the harpists ability to maintain evennesswhile controlling gradual changes of tempo and dynamic within a very familiar technical landscape. One of the other important things was to write works specifically for the lever harp (as opposed to pedal harp) especially given that so much lever harp repertoire consists of arrangements or re-arranged pedal harp music. The lever system offers many advantages over the pedal system including the opportunity to employ chromatic possibilities that would otherwise be impossible. So some of these works indulge and celebrate these idiosyncrasies. I hope you will enjoy playing them as much as I enjoyed writing them.'

Written by François Joseph Naderman (1781-1835) Sonatinas Progressive Op. 92 consists of a series of seven small sonatas. The level of difficulty alternates between intermediate and advanced as these can be played at different speeds but necessitates some strong technique as well as some pedal changes. These Sonatinas Progressive Op. 92 are still considered as some of the most famous pieces of the Harp repertoire today. François Joseph Naderman was a classical harpist composer and teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. His vocation was developed by growing up as the son of a LuthierHarp maker. He also wrote Sonatas for Harp Harp and Cello studies and other pieces.

The years between 1900 and 1925 in Paris were some of the most fruitful in the history of harp repertoire. Debussy?s ?Danses sacree et profane? and his ?Sonate pour flute, alto, et harpe,? Caplet?s ?Masque of the Red Death? and his ?Two Divertissements,? Gabriel Pierne?s ?Concertstucke? and ?Impromptu caprice,? and Ravel?s ?Introduction et Allegro? were among the many important compositions written during this period. Many harpists would give pride of place in this list, however, to Gabriel Faure?s ?Impromptu? and ?Une chatelaine en sa tour.?? now published here in one volume for the first time. These are both essentials for every serious student of the harp.

French born harpist and composer Marcel Grandjany (1891-1975) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before spending much of his working life in America. His Rhapsodie For Harp was composed in 1921 and is a sublime addition to the Harp's repertoire. Grandjany was a teacher of Harp at the Juilliard School for 37 years whilst also composing and transcribing many works for the instrument. Rhapsodie For Harp is based on a theme of a Gregorian Easter chant intended to be accompanied by Orchestra. Exploiting the Harp to a virtuosic level  Rhapsodie ForHarp by Grandjany makes for a thrilling performance for advanced harpists.

Castle on a Cloud is sung by the child Cosette in Les Misérables. It is a hopeful song of her imaginary world where life is beautiful and she is not subjected to the drudgery of her hard existence. Sylvia Woods has arranged this lilting song for lever or pedal harp. There are 7 lever changes in the piece so it is for lower intermediate to intermediate level players. Fingerings and lyrics are included as well as lever and pedal changes. Two 2-page versions are included: one for lever harps tuned to C and the other for lever harps tuned to flats. Pedal harpists can play either version. The arrangement for lever harps tuned to C is in the key of D (2 sharps) with A and Clever changes needed. The arrangement for lever harps tuned to flats is in the key of C with B and G lever changes needed. Either version may be played on most small harps with about 26 strings if you play everything an octave higher than written. There are special instructions in the introduction telling you what you'll need to change if you have a small harp.

French composer organist and opera director Marcel Samuel Rousseau (1882-1955) studied at the Paris Conservatoire and won the Prix de Rome in 1905. He is best remembered for his operas however his other compositions have not gone amiss Variations Pastorales Sur Un Vieux ‎Noël being no exception. Rosseau was highly influenced by Gabriel Fauré and he was an expert in chromatic harmony often seeking to evoke a strong sense of the dramatic in his works. These features are prominent in Variations Pastorales Sur Un Vieux ‎Noël which beings with a calm theme before developing into eightcontrasting variations and a conclusion. For all intermediate to advanced harpists Rousseau's Variations Pastorales Sur Un Vieux ‎Noël is an essential alternative addition to the repertoire.

Brocéliande is a piece for Harp by Annie Challan. Lasting 2’30 minutes this piece was written for elementary level (upper beginner / intermediate level). It can be played on lever or pedal Harps as there are only a few accidentals. This tribute to the magical forest is the perfect piece to be played in recitals. Annie Challan (born in 1940) is a French Harpist who was the youngest player at the Paris Operas when she started working there. She composed numerous pieces for the Harp.
