Sixteen songs and seven arias for high voice and Piano composed over a fifteen-year period from 1989 to 2004 with texts in English French German and translations from German Portuguese and Russian. While the original text-free version of Life's Chaos appeared aspart of the musical accompaniment to Dziga Vertov's Man With A Movie Camera there are songs from three of his film scores: The Cook the Thief His Wife and Her Lover Prospero's Books and The Diary OfAnne Frank and from four song cycles: L'Orgie Parisienne Six Celan Songs Cycle of Disquietude and Acts Of Beauty. There are arias from two stage operas Facing Goya and Man and Boy:Dada and a TV opera Letters Riddles and Writs.

Those interested in French music have often had reason to be grateful to Roger Nichols; his writings on Debussy, Ravel, Messiaen and Poulenc are indispensable to the music lover. Nichols now turns his attentions to the mélodie, where it is his mission to encourage singers to explore beyond the well-trodden paths of French song. In these two anthologies he does not ignore masterpieces by composers of the stature of Fauré and Duparc, but sets them alongside music - almost impossible to find elsewhere in print - by such under-estimated figures as Reber, Viardot, Massé and Paladilhe. Even the more celebrated songs are often not easily found in practical editions, which makes this selection an ideal starting point for wider exploration. As well as complete translations of the songs, there is a useful and concise introduction on singing in French, together with an illuminating historical note and critical commentary; and Nichols gives full due to the poets who were of crucial importance in the development of the mélodie tradition. Mozart's lieder reveal him to be a dramatist in miniature. Even if he failed to cultivate this genre systematically he nevertheless directed his creative powers toward the lied at all stages of his career. His first effort (now lost) was written at the age of six or seven and he took up the genre again and again at irregular intervals down to the final year of his life. None the less Mozart usually chose to write a lied only when there was a special occasion for doing so. Even the preface to the firt complete edition of his lieder published in 1799 by Breitkopf & Härtel refers to them as 'occasional pieces' as does the Leipzig Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung inthe same year. Mozart himself doubtless regarded these ingenious little works as 'pieces for friends' and was not disposed to think of them as particularly significant. Love and Time-Dring herself had perfect pitch and these songs make technical demands upon the singer to good effect.Twentieth century English composer singer and actress Madeleine Dring wrote songs that frequently employed jazz chords in their accompaniment which has been compared in the US to Gershwin. Here there are touches of artsong French chanson and some element that is Dring’s own idiomatic style.
