Let It Groove is all about the pocket! The feeling of the chart is reminiscent of Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man or Lee Morgan's Sidewinder. The bass line is anchored to the bass drum pattern, and the enclosed rhythm exercises are an excellent tool for creating a cohesive rhythmic concept throughout the band. The solo section is a 12 bar Bb blues and can be opened up to include several soloists.

This original shuffle is solidly scored with a Benny Golson/Quincy Jones flavor. The saxes are featured on the head with the solo in the first tenor part. The bridge features a two sax/two trumpet ensemble with a tasty pyramid background that is fun to play. Ken has gone to great lengths to write extensive rhythm section parts, assuring that even the most inexperienced players can make this one sound smooth.

As recorded by the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra on their 1972 album Suite For Pops, soprano sax gets the lion's share of solo action in this bright swinger, with additional solos for tenor, trumpet and drums added for good measure. Plenty of bold tutti writing keeps the overall energy (and volume) level high, making this a great program opener or closer. Duration 5:30.

Just about everyone has heard the melody to Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho, right? Arranger Mike Lewis took this traditional melody and scored it for the young band. With a rubato sax and piano intro, Mike moves his chart right into an easy swing feel. There are no individual improvised solos, just ensemble with some section work, with some nice parts for the trombones. Optional parts are included but this chart will sound full with reduced instrumentation. Easy ranges, accessible rhythms and the rubato ending can be as dramatic as you like. A very nice chart.
