The Florida Bandmasters Association commissioned this chart for the 2023 All-State Jazz ensemble. This is an authentically-written Salsa that truly fits its title, beginning with a poignant, written piano solo that transitions into a medium tempo Cuban Son Montuno (aka Salsa) before turning up the fire with an uptempo Songo groove. All rhythm parts are clearly written out.

A fine chart for a concert, a festival, or a dance gig. A medium swing at 114 BPM, written solos are provided for alto, trombone 1, and piano. With great dynamics, sax solis, and a sweet shout chorus, this chart swings all by itself, and you'll love its voicings, too. Optional vibes. (4:04).

This is not an encyclopedia, but an unusual juxta position of two styles of music. The fanfare is an exciting straight-ahead bit of writing which works its way through contrapuntal and polytonal paths and somehow finds itself in the middle of a funk version of itself. After some solos and a drum solo transition the music completes the symmetric circle and ends as it started. A great opener!

The Iguana Returns is a grade 2 funk chart. The nomadic iguana (first introduced in a previous release in this series, Please Don't Climb On The Iguana) is a steel sculpture outside of the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul. Since the earlier piece, the Science Museum has changed locations, so the iguana had to leave for a time. It has since returned to its new home, looking forward to new adventures in the future.

In its original version, this contemporary ballad featured alto sax soloist -- here tenor sax is the star -- but the rich harmonic character and lyrical qualities of the professional version have been retained. Developing players will need to practice the split triplets since they give the tune its loose, relaxed feelingbut that work will be well rewarded at concert time. Rhythm section parts are notated with chords cued, and a guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson is included. Duration 3:10.

Commissioned by the Kentucky Music Educators' Association for its 2002 All-State Jazz Ensemble, the inspiration for this medium-advanced, up-swing release comes from the music of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and Birdland, NYC's legendary jazz club. Though improvised solos are assigned to trumpet and trombone, chord sheets are included so anyone can serve as soloist. Mike's score calls for five trumpets, and the chart takes about six minutes from start to finish.

Commissioned by the Gates Chili High School Jazz Ensemble in Rochester (NY), this winning original alternates between a Latin and straight 8th-note feel, and draws from the ascending melodic minor scale and its related modes for source material. It's a sophisticated chart with moderate range demands and notated rhythm section parts. Soloists can navigate the 16-measure solo using just a single scale over hip jazz chords. Duration 6:55.
