Amen is a medium up-tempo gospel-swing, influenced by Horace Silver's The Preacher. Mike Titlebaum underlaid the bluesy melodies, developed throughout the arrangement, with a driving shuffle rhythm first introduced by the trombones in the intro. There is a written trombone solo included but the solo section can be opened up for any other instrument. Amen is based on the etude with the same name from Jim Snidero's Jazz Conception Series. First trumpet: E (top of staff).

Just about everyone has heard the melody to Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho, right? Arranger Mike Lewis took this traditional melody and scored it for the young band. With a rubato sax and piano intro, Mike moves his chart right into an easy swing feel. There are no individual improvised solos, just ensemble with some section work, with some nice parts for the trombones. Optional parts are included but this chart will sound full with reduced instrumentation. Easy ranges, accessible rhythms and the rubato ending can be as dramatic as you like. A very nice chart. Strayhorn's Cashmere Cutie is about texture and composition. A medium swing at 132--138 BPM, this chart is the real deal---composed and arranged by Billy Strayhorn. It's loaded with beautiful sophisticated voicings, yet the music flows easily. Tenor 1 doubles clarinet and alto 2 doubles a two-measure flute line. There is a written-out piano introduction that is complex but it can be improvised in lieu of the written part plus there is an optional alternate easier piano intro part included. 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 4 rhythm.

There are lots of swing charts based on blues changes. This one is in a class of its own. An attention-grabbing intro leads to the unison ensemble melody, followed by a few choruses where all sections trade off with the lead line. The open solo section can feature any instrument with suggested solos included. After a solo spot for drums things get even more interesting and fun! The dynamic level comes way down and your bass player gets to shine with some tasty written solo licks. The final ensemble chorus builds to a shout section that really - SHOUTS! A very impressive, effective and playable chart!
