A very hip and contemporary chart arranged and recorded by Kris Berg for his big band in the Dallas area. A mysterioso-sounding intro blossoms into this powerful chart. Solo space for alto, trumpet, tenor, and trombone, and lots of ensemble action for the whole group. Lead trumpet range is to written D above the staff.

This is one very cool and tasty ballad. After a short 4 bar piano intro, the melody is played by a quartet made up of your strongest players - trumpet, alto, tenor and trombone. The whole Band joins in for some great ensemble work (trumpets never leave the staff) which leads into an easy but very hip piano solo. Then more great ensemble, and finally the piano is again featured at the end. The piano part is completely written out, and the right hand has a single note line throughout. There's nothing high, loud or fast here - but what a great way to impress and audience by showcasing your band's ability to play with A Gentle Touch.

Written during Thad's later years in Denmark after he and Mel Lewis parted ways, this bright, double-time tune designates piano as the main soloist, but includes an optional repeat of the solo chorus for trumpet and/or soprano (or alto) sax. A rubato intro and ending, both featuring solo piano, give the chart a strong sense of form and symmetry. Duration 4:00.
