Rock On is written in a medium-up tempo rock-boogaloo style. The solo section features the tenor saxophone but can be opened up for any instrument. The very easy solo changes and the style are ideal to encourage young players. Then the whole band continues with an impressive ensemble section and a short coda. Let It Groove is all about the pocket! The feeling of the chart is reminiscent of Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man or Lee Morgan's Sidewinder. The bass line is anchored to the bass drum pattern, and the enclosed rhythm exercises are an excellent tool for creating a cohesive rhythmic concept throughout the band. The solo section is a 12 bar Bb blues and can be opened up to include several soloists.
