Here is a beautiful trombone solo feature for jazz ensemble with optional string orchestra. The string parts can easily be replaced or augmented with the included synthesizer part, or the work can be performed with standard big band instrumentation only. Your developing trombone soloist is supported through a series of different scenes with lush, graceful orchestration and an ever-descending harmonic progression. A transcription of the improvised portion of the solo on the recording is provided. An optional marimba part adds depth, color and motion. The top trumpet/flugel note is F-sharp. This is a subtle and mature work for jazz orchestra.

Basie's Blues is a rousing medium tempo big band chart which also functions as a Basie-style piano feature. Arranger Russell Schmidt has crafted a unique three-horn harmonization (plus optional flute and clarinet) of the main theme, giving this piece a very distinctive sound. In addition to solo space for the pianist, there is a bass solo (although this solo can easily be moved to another instrument, if desired). Basie's Blues is based on one of the easiest etudes from Jim Snidero's Easy Jazz Conception Series.

Strayhorn's Cashmere Cutie is about texture and composition. A medium swing at 132--138 BPM, this chart is the real deal---composed and arranged by Billy Strayhorn. It's loaded with beautiful sophisticated voicings, yet the music flows easily. Tenor 1 doubles clarinet and alto 2 doubles a two-measure flute line. Here's an effective bright swing piece scored in the popular Count Basie style that is designed to make advancing groups sound their very best. As in many Basie-style works, dynamics and articulations play a key role in any presentation. For optimum results in achieving a tight ensemble sound, the rhythm section sets the pace in the opening moments of the introduction. Since the drummer enters after 24 measures, the guitarist and bass lock tempo with the pianist, giving them the chance to learn self-reliance without the drummer policing the time and groove. Alternating between Latin and swing, this impressive new piece is reminiscent of the way jazz players usually perform On Green Dolphin Street. The opening Latin section is over a rhythmic ostinato and pedal F, which makes the release to swing even more effective. The solos for alto saxophone and trumpet are one chorus each (but could easily be extended) using the same Latin/swing format as the head. Following the solo section is a saxophone soli and an exciting breakdown section. Some wide dynamic contrasts in the final ensemble section take the chart out. (Trumpet 1 to written D, Trombone to A-flat, Trombone 4 is for bass trombone.).
