Paul Merrill, director of the Cornell University Jazz Ensemble (Ithaca, NY), commissioned this engaging bossa nova original for proficient groups. Don't let the title fool you, though, because there's an abundance of subtle, yet challenging material here requiring a mature approach from the ensemble. The melody is based on a simple four-note motif played by Miles Davis on his album Tutu. Brown later adapted this score for small-group and recorded it on his CD Night Waves (Brown Cats Productions/BC9501). Guitar, tenor sax, and flugelhorn are featured in melodic and solo roles. Duration 5:35.

Minor Madness is a grade 1.5 minor key swing chart. The opening melodic statement features stop time in the rhythm section before moving to a straight-ahead swing feel on the bridge. Material from the introduction is then used as a transition to the solo section. The shout chorus features unison rhythms that are very helpful in getting young players to phrase properly. Introductory material returns at the end, tying the entire piece together.

Tropical Sunrise is a laid-back bossa-nova tune. With a relaxed and unhurried feel, students will learn to pay close attention to dynamic contrasts, especially on the soft side. The capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, is known for parties and festivals but it has a quieter side as well. This piece reflects that softer edge.

For your developing group, here's a very easy bossa nova chart to fit any group's playing level. No solos are needed to play this one, and rhythmic reading consists of mostly whole notes and half notes. Harry Miedema's great changes flow over the Brazilian bossa beat in the rhythm section. An excellent change-of-pace tune for your beginning jazzers.
