Strayhorn's Cashmere Cutie is about texture and composition. A medium swing at 132--138 BPM, this chart is the real deal---composed and arranged by Billy Strayhorn. It's loaded with beautiful sophisticated voicings, yet the music flows easily. Tenor 1 doubles clarinet and alto 2 doubles a two-measure flute line. There is a written-out piano introduction that is complex but it can be improvised in lieu of the written part plus there is an optional alternate easier piano intro part included. 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 4 rhythm.

Introduce your band and audiences to a little 2-beat and some jazz history with this easy to prepare arrangement of this great jazz standard. Originally a ragtime piano piece, That's-A-Plenty is most commonly associated with Dixieland music. This arrangement now makes it available to jazz bands at the medium-easy level. There's lots of fun for all the sections, including some smeared notes for the bones and some short solis for the saxes. The drummer gets some tom-tom work a la Gene Krupa, and while there are no improvised solos, one (or all) of the trumpets gets to do a written out call and response solo back and forth with the rest of the band. This one is a guaranteed crowd pleaser!

This chart gives every player and every section the chance to show off! First the tune is played by brass in octaves. Next there's a sax soli. And after that the brass play a contrapuntal chorus, followed by a full group shout. Last but not least, there are two sections that may be opened up for solos with backgrounds. The pace is moderate, and each set comes with a supplemental guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson.
