In Horace Silver's own words, this sassy, bluesy shuffle with a bebop-style melody portrays a mythical man of rather dubious character. An alto, trumpet and trombone trio give the opening and closing presentations of the theme, and each of those players carries a full-length solo chorus in between. A sustained band chord with ad lib flourishes by the trio brings everything to a dramatic, satisfying close. Rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued. Duration 5:40.

Steeped in the Count Basie style, Miles to Go starts with a trio (tenor sax, trumpet and trombone) introducing the melody over the rhythm section. With each successive phrase, sections are added until the whole band is in full swing. The solo section introduces a staple of blues playing and a technique heard in jam sessions everywhere - stop time, giving soloists a chance to create lots of excitement. The chart concludes with descending bell tones in the brass leading to a unison shout chorus. With its up-tempo feel and brash shouts from all instruments, Miles to Go is sure to be a crowd pleaser that is perfect to open or close any concert.

As recorded by Buddy Rich on the album of the same name, this 'fat-back' rock classic begins with a repeated vamp featuring solo guitar and/or piano before a horn trio -- alto, tenor, trumpet -- paves the way for the full ensemble entrance. This is high-intensity writing for all, and solo space is reserved for tenor and guitar. A sudden switch to swing in the final bars provides a perfect ending. Rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued. Duration 5:15.
