This is up-tempo setting of the classic spiritual is a guaranteed winner! This is a great contest/concert selection for band's at this grade level. Once the notes get under the fingers it swings hard and shows off the whole band. The ranges and rhythms are very reasonable, but the excitement generated is off the charts! The intro is a piano vamp, followed by the saxes playing the melody in unison. The trumpets then join the altos, while the bones and tenors play some background punches. The bones and saxes trade off playing the bridge, and then full ensemble plays up to the open solo section. Following the solos, everything quiets way down and the gradual buildup to a real flag-waver of an ending begins.

A medium swinger that’s really nice. Includes an optional flute part that adds color to the chart and gives it a unique flavor. Opens with a combo within the band featuring Alto, Trumpet and the optional Flute and then really gets down to some serious ensemble writing which is always a feature of Mark Latham charts. After an open solo section (written suggested solos are provided), the combo reprises the theme and then it’s off to the big finish. An exceptionally tasty chart by an exceptionally talented writer!

There are lots of swing charts based on blues changes. This one is in a class of its own. An attention-grabbing intro leads to the unison ensemble melody, followed by a few choruses where all sections trade off with the lead line. The open solo section can feature any instrument with suggested solos included. After a solo spot for drums things get even more interesting and fun! The dynamic level comes way down and your bass player gets to shine with some tasty written solo licks. The final ensemble chorus builds to a shout section that really - SHOUTS! A very impressive, effective and playable chart!
