Les Fantaisies op. 116 de Johannes Brahms furent probablement composées avec les Intermezzi op. 117 durant le séjour qu'il fit au cours de l'été 1892 à Bad Ischl, dans le Salzkammergut. Cet endroit l'inspirait visiblement à composer de la musique pour piano seul, puisque l'année suivante, il travailla à d'autres cycles. Parmi ces oeuvres tardives tout imprégnées de mélancolie, l'opus 116 se détache par ses contrastes. Quatre Intermezzi 'rêveurs' (selon les dires de Clara Schumann) alternent avec trois Capricci 'profondément passionnés'. Du pur Brahms à sept reprises, mais de difficulté moyenne et donc pas réservé uniquement aux virtuoses. Nous ne savons pas grand chose des compositions de Händel sur des poèmes de Barthold Heinrich Brockes. Elles semblent avoir vu le jour au cours des années 1724-1727. L'autographe ne mentionne ni titre, ni ordre des pièces. Même l'instrumentation y est absente. Plusieurs alternatives s'offrent pour le choix de l'instrument soliste qui accompagne la voix dans un jeu d'imitation. Le violon, la flûte ou le hautbois semblent néanmoins les plus probables. Notre édition pratique offre, outre des parties séparées pour l'instrument soliste et la basse, une réalisation, par l'éditeur Ullrich Scheideler, de la basse continue. / Piano

Les trois célèbres Intermezzi op. 117 peuvent être considérés comme l'incarnation de l'oeuvre tardive pour piano de Brahms. Clara Schumann confessait: 'Dans ces pièces, j'entends enfin à nouveau une vie musicale s'emparer de mon âme et je les joue avec ardeur'. Comme bien souvent, Brahms s'exprima de manière laconique. Bien qu'il considérait les trois Intermezzi comme des 'berceuses', il en refusa officiellement le titre: 'il faudrait alors mettre 'Berceuse d'une mère malheureuse' ou d'un célibataire inconsolable'. La nouvelle édition de ces pièces de difficulté moyenne (degré 5/6) est désormais revue d'après le texte de la nouvelle édition complète des oeuvres de Brahms et doigtée par Andreas Boyde. / Piano
