Contest March. Par SPARKE PHILIP. Philip Sparke wrote this march for the famous brass band contest held ever year on Whit Friday in Oldham and Saddleworth. Given the competition’s long history (over 120 years), he consciously composed this piece in a very traditional march form. To conclude our Godzilla show, Mike Story opens with a powerful theme that gives way to a short trumpet solo, followed by a quiet section featuring wistful chords in the woodwinds and mallets. Arr. Philip Sparke. Par BYRD WILLIAM. The Battell was written during the late 14th Century when England was in a mood of national celebration after victory over the Spanish and French Armadas. The movement which Byrd called Marche Before The Battell became known as The Earl of Oxford?s Marchand it appears with that title in an early manuscript copy of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. The initial idea was for a millennium piece, which it is, but rather than add to the many celebratory pieces that have understandably been written to salute the 3rd millennium, Philip Sparke thought it would perhaps be appropriate to think about the aspects of life that are constantly with us (such as faith and philosophy) rather than the exciting changes that the year 2000 has undeniably wrought. Impressions of a Village. Par DE HAAN JACOB. Bliss: Impressions of a Village contains three impressions of a village in the beautiful Brabant province in the Netherlands. The fi rst movement is in a very ‘classical style’ and, appropriately, captures the village’s history. Saxophones and a glockenspiel follow the path of a small, playful river. The entire band join in as the small river approaches an ancient castle.
