The Odyssee tells the story of Odysseus, the undaunted hero.
In times long ago the blind poet Homer wrote this famous epic.
The Odyssey follows the Iliad, the story of the bloody war between the Greek and the Trojans. This battle endsafter ten years thanks to the Odysseys famous trick. the Trojan Horse.
The Odyssey is not a war epic, but a story about perseverance, loyalty, adventure, and the survival instinct of its ingenious hero.
In The Odyssey, Homer describes howOdysseus, the king of Ithaca, had to endure another ten years of affliction after the ten years of war in Troy before he could finally return to his home land.
During those years, his wife, Penelope, had to try and keep her many admirers away.These men not only wanted het hand but also the kingship. To prove her husbands worth, she played a trick: As soon as I have finished weaving this shroud for my father-in-law, Laertes, I will choose one of you to become my husband, she promisedthem.
But during the night, she secretly loosened what she had woven during the day, prolonging the time until Odysseus would finally return. After twenty long years, when he finally stood at the door, she wondered: Is this really my husband? Ishe an imposter? Cunningly, she asked him to move the bed, because only she and her husband know that the bed was immovable and was build around an old three trunk! Odysseus was deeply moved: this really was his wife, his Penelope!
Nearly threethousands years later, the loyalty and strength of this character, and all the dangerous adventures that Odysseus survived thanks to courage and intelligence, still moves us today.

Odyssee by Jan Bosveld is not just an adventure story, butrather a characteristic piece in which memories of Homers story can be heard.
The composition opens with a firm, stirring theme describing our hero, Odysseus, in detail: This man is not to be taken lightly.
The further development of thisshort introduction completes this character sketch: trustworthy, perseverant, and a genius.
After that we can picture Odysseus on the lonely beach of Ogygia. Do the trumpets depict his memories of the war of Troy? Does he think of his wife, as werecognise the weaving loom of Penelope in the murmuring eighth?
In the solemn, plaintive part that follows, we can imagine Penelope feeling lonely, sitting in the womens room with her servants.One of the girls plays the harp, but that does notclear the sombre atmosphere. Then we can imagine seeing the sorceress Circe, who changed Odysseus men into swine. After she gives a simple magic sign something follows that reminds us of the sound of pigs grunting. Then the Odysseus theme resounds:the hero comes to savi his comrades. Assisted by Hermes, he forces Circe to lift the spell.
The piece ends the same way as it began, with an animated theme: Odysseus is still the same, undefeated and not to be taken lighty!

Het muzikale relaas van de Griekse schrijver Homerus over de held Odyssee in een karakterstuk vol herinneringen.
Een stevig opgewekt thema symboliseert de grootsheid van Odyssee en zijn karaktertrekken - betrouwbaar, volhardend en vernuftig. Detegenslagen welke hij tegenkomt en in het tweede tragische gedeelte dreigen te escaleren, nemen in het derde snelle gedeelte bij zijn verschijning toch weer een positieve wending.
Nijmegenaar Jan Bosveld bewijst in dit originele werk dat hij opde hoogte is van de onmogelijkheden, maar vooral de ongekende mogelijkheden van muzikanten uit de lagere afdelingen.

Hymnus was commissioned by the Wilhelmina Easterein Fanfare Orchestra in the Autumn of 1999 for their performance at the World Music Contest, Kerkrade.

The commission was the result of a collaboration between the composer and the thenmusical director, Marten van der Wal.

The exact meaning of the word Hymnus is not known but it is taken in this presentation to mean hymn or hymn-like.
The melodic material is organic and grows from an initial unison tone. Thisinterval is gradually expanded to form the cell F E C F, a semitone, third, fifth. The only other melodic motif is the ascending three-note pattern spanning a major third. This is the second of his compositions to use this ascending motif, theother being Fanfare for a Bright New Age for Brass Band and Organ, also of 2000. These characteristic intervals appear in many contrasting moods and guises throughout the piece.

The opening unison notes are intended to convey as sense ofpower and magnificence, like the first sounds at the dawning of the universe.
After the immense power, a period of stunned silence and reverence. The evolution of the hymn melody incorporates a variety of moods and atmospheres, sometimes expressing much joy and celebration whilst also suggesting periods of intense savagery or prayerful contemplation.
The hymn builds as the piece progresses and is finally stated in its complete form at letter W.

The official worldpremiere of the work was given by Wilhelmina Easterein at the World Music Contest 2001. Whilst the composer was unable to attend in person, he was able to enjoy the premier simultaneously transmitted via a mobile phone from the audience!

Conductors Note
The tempo indications are to be viewed as a guide rather than a literal instruction. Within the music there is an innate sense of pulse and metre, lending itself to considerable rubato.
Melody is king, and all else is mere support and decoration, careful attention must therefore be given to balance.

Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are “concertante” in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again.

Het tempo van deze mars is statig en de thema’s zijn concertant van karakter: Artemis is dus eerder geschikt als concertmars dan als loopmars. Technisch is dit werk niet erg lastig om spelen, al wordt af en toe wel wat vingervaardigheidvereist. De triomelodie is echter uitgesproken lyrisch en biedt diverse secties binnen het orkest de mogelijkheid om zich melodisch en expressief te etaleren. Een aangenaam klinkende en prima speelbare concertmars!

Artemis ist die griechische Göttin der Jagd und der Wälder. Jan Van der Roost ließ sich zum wiederholten Male von der griechischen Mythologie inspirieren und komponierte diesen Marsch mit gemäßigtem Tempo und konzertanten Themen. Obwohl technisch nicht sehr schwer, erfordert er doch stellenweise etwas Fingerfertigkeit. Der Trio-Teil ist jedoch besonders lyrisch und bietet verschiedenen Registern des Blasorchesters die Möglichkeit, sich in Melodie und Ausdruck zu beweisen. Kurz gesagt ist Artemis ein ausgezeichneter und gut spielbarer Konzertmarsch, der viele Blasorchester anspricht.

Artémis est la déesse grecque de la nature sauvage et de la chasse. Dans l’art occidental, elle est souvent représentée armée d’un arc et de flèches et entourée de cerfs, de lions et d’ours. Évoluant sur un tempo majestueux et développant des thèmes au caractère concertant, Artemis s’inscrit pleinement dans la lignée des grandes marches de concert. Hormis quelques passages nécessitant une plus grande souplesse des doigts, elle ne contient que peu de difficultés techniques. Artemis est une pièce brillante qui convient au plus grand nombre d’Orchestres d’Harmonie.

Artemis è la Dea greca della natura selvatica e della caccia. Nella cultura occidentale, è spesso rappresentata armata di arco e frecce e circondata da cervi, leoni e orsi. Evolvendosi su un tempo maestoso e sviluppando temi centrali dal carattere concertante, Artemis rientra nella linea delle grandi marce da concerto. Ad eccezione di qualche passaggio che necessita una maggiore scioltezza delle dita, il brano contiene solo poche difficolt tecniche. Artemis è un pezzo brillante adatto alla maggior parte delle bande.

I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer’s youngest son’s wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literal quotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and fanfare band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!

I Shall Love But Thee is in de letterlijke zin van het woord een gelegenheidswerk, want het werd oorspronkelijk geschreven naar aanleiding van het huwelijk van de jongste zoon van de componist. De teksten zijn van William Shakespeare: Jan Van der Roost werd erdoor ge nspireerd tot het creëren van indringende en aansprekende muziek, die in stilistisch opzicht doet denken aan Henry Purcell (in het eerste deel) en Georg Friedrich Händel (in het tweede deel), twee componisten die op teksten van Shakespeare hebben gecomponeerd ook al zijn er geen letterlijke citaten gebruikt. During his short lifetime Max Reger (1873-1916) was a prolific composer with many of his best known works being composed for organ. The ten chorale preludes in this selection are from his set of Thirty Short Chorale Preludes Op.135a composed as short voluntaries for liturgical use rather than for recitals in these arrangements Philip Sparke has kept this in mind and each prelude can be performed with minimal instrumentation for those occasions where a small band is needed. They also make great pieces for band warm-ups or studies in intonation, sound and balance.

Max Reger komponierte eine Fülle an Werken vieler Genres. Unter anderem schrieb er 30 kleine Vorspiele zu den gebräuchlichsten Chorälen für Orgel, die mehr als für den liturgischen Rahmen, denn als Vortragsstücke gedacht waren. Seine Blasorchesterbearbeitung dieser zehn Präludien machte Philip Sparke daher für eine minimale Besetzung spielbar, so dass sie auch Gottesdienst verwendet werden können. Außerdem eignen sie sich auch hervorragend als Aufwärmstücke, Stimm-, Klang- oder Balanceübungen oder in verschiedenen Zusammenstellungen als kleine Suiten für den Konzertgebrauch. Eine vielseitige Sammlung, die in keinem Repertoire fehlen sollte!

The initial idea was for a millennium piece, which it is, but rather than add to the many celebratory pieces that have understandably been written to salute the 3rd millennium, Philip Sparke thought it would perhaps be appropriate to think about the aspects of life that are constantly with us (such as faith and philosophy) rather than the exciting changes that the year 2000 has undeniably wrought. This calm meditative work will bring a moment of serenity and reflection to any concert.

Time Remembered ('Erinnerung an alte Zeiten') ist ein Jahrtausendstück in zweierlei Hinsicht: Es wurde zur Jahrtausendwende geschrieben und drückt aus, dass die Zukunft sich nur auf die Vergangenheit aufbauen lässt. Arsenal was composed for the 50th anniversary of the ‘Harmonie van het Spoorwegarsenaal’[railroad arsenal], based in Mechelen (Belgium). Rather a stately concert march, it has beautiful themes and a broad melody in the trio. It was premiered in the Mechelen Cultural Center on the 11th of May 1996 during the solemn ceremony, opening the anniversary year and conducted by the composer. In the mean time, Arsenal has been recorded several times by such renowed performers like the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, the Black Dyke BB etc.

Wer auf der Suche nach einem originalen, anspruchsvollen, eleganten und festlichen Konzertmarsch ist, hat ihn mit Arsenal von Jan Van der Roost gefunden. Arsenal wurde aus Anlass des 50jährigen Jubiläums der 'Harmonie van het Spoorwegarsenaal' (Blasorchester des belgischen Eisenbahnarsenals) in Mechelen, Belgien, komponiert. This piece, though based on rather simple rhythmic and melodic fragments, is a majestic fanfare designed to herald the year 2000. It features contrasting flourishes by woodwinds, brass and percussion.
