Or Organ-Born in Geneva of a jeweller father (and excellent flautist) and singer mother Marguerite Roesgen-Champion (1894-1976) was one of those rare women who reconciled family life (in 1926 she settled in Paris with her husband a philately merchant) with a professional activity devoted to music. Her abundant output graced all genres with a predilection for sacred pieces the art song the Piano and chamber music. Published respectively in 1950 and 1953 the two Nocturnes for Oboe and Piano (or Organ) have their place in the glorious tradition of French music from the between-the-wars period. The first Nocturne subtitled 'Noël' is dedicated to Pierre Bajeux(1899-1961) who taught the oboe class at the Paris Conservatoire as of 1941. Of classic ABA construction this piece as simple as it is expressive is in the form of a pastorale: here the gentle opening recitative unfolds its dreamy melancholic volutes of which the modal character would have appealed to Charles Koechlin. The second Nocturne presents subtle modulations that give it a refined elegance. In both cases this tastefully polished music invites us to stroll in an Arcadian landscape bathed in azure: 'There all is order and beauty / Luxury calm and voluptuousness'.

Concerto In C Minor for Oboe Strings and Basso Continuo composed by Matthäus Nikolaus Stulick [or Georg Friedrich Händel or Johann David Heinichen]. Piano reduction. There are three versions of this concerto with different assignments: Source A: In the library Schwerin [D-SWl] as „de Sing. Stulick' [Mus.5337]. Source B: In the collection Rheda [D-RH] as „Del Sing. Heinichen' [Ms 389]. Source C: In the univesity library Upsala [S-Uu]als „Dell Sing. Hendell' [i hs. 19:28]. The distribution of a baroque composition under various composers names was not uncommon and usually meant that it was aworthy work of high compositional quality. This Concerto for Oboe Strings and Basso continuo can serve in any case as evidence for this thesis. The question which of the three composers mentioned was the creator of the concert can not be answered conclusively. Two arguments suggest however that Matthäus Nikolaus Stulick (c.1700-1732) is the most likely of the three candidates: - The Schwerin manuscript [Source A] that names Stulick as the composer is the best by far; it contains far fewer errors and inconsistencies than the other two. - The designation of a work by a foreign composer name makes only sense if an unknown composer publishes under a name of a much more prominent composer not vice versa. Why should a work of Handel or at his time well-known Heinichen be played under the name of someone less known? We do not know much about the life of Matthäus Nikolaus Stulick. He was born around 1700 in Bohemia and worked in the 1730s as concertmaster at the court in Mainz where he died in 1732. Besides two Oboe concertos he composed a concerti à 4 for three wind instruments and BC.

G.F. Handel's Oboe Concerto No.1 In B Flat for Oboe and Strings has been arranged here for Oboe with Piano accompaniment by Arthur Willner. The solo part is also included on a separate insert.

Written in 1715 the Oboe was still somewhat of a novelty to write for and Albinoni seems to have had the Trumpet in mind and he wrote as the piece is in the Trumpet 'friendly' Key of D major. It is however a wonderful piece for Oboe and is presented here with a Piano reduction of the original Orchestral score.

As a prestigious composer of the early 20th century Maurice Ravel's Pièce En Forme De Habanera For Oboe transcribed for the Oboe by Fernand Gillet or for Cor Anglais by G. A. Leduc contains many features which continue to make the composer's music popular and loved to this day. Known for his masterful melodies and rich harmonies  Pièce En Forme De Habanera For Oboe clearly exemplifies these qualities through flourishing Oboe or Cor Anglais lines and evocative chordal and rhythmic Piano accompaniments. Moreover Habanera rhythms heard throughout the piece create furtherexcitement. All of these musical elements combine to create a highly enjoyable piece for the Oboe and Cor Anglais repertoire. In addition the clear print of separate solo and accompaniment parts in this edition make it an irresistible purchase for aspiring Oboe and Cor Anglais players.

Composed for Oboe and Piano accompaniment Piece V by César Franck is a melodious piece for intermediate players. The piece begins with a quiet introduction starting Andantino quasi allegretto. The main theme is then played twice with the Piano introducing each phrases followed by the Oboe repeating them. The piece ends in a really nice harmony between the Oboe and the Piano. There is no major difficulty in this really soft work which would be thoroughly enjoyed by the audience during a recital. César Franck (1822-1890) was a renowned musician (Organ and Piano) composer and professor bornin the United Kingdom of Netherland (Liège) who was based in Paris. Even though he only produced few compositions some of these pieces were very famous such as 'Symphony in D minor' and 'Prelude Chorale and Fugue' among others.

Composer's NoteSecond Meeting was written in January 1992. The first performance took place in Stockholm in February (Bengt Rosengren oboe and Stefan Bojsten piano). The work belongs to a planned series of virtuosoduos 'meetings'. The first one (from 1982) is written for clarinet and harpsichord.Formally Second Meeting is very close to a familiar 'theme and variations' category although there are seven themes or melodies all quiteclosely related.In the autumn of the same year I decided to write a version of the piece for oboe and a small orchestra trying to remain reasonably faithful to the original (a la Ravel perhaps). Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sarabande et Allegro is a sublime addition to the Oboe repertoire. Much of the composer's works show neo-classical features which is also the case in Sarabande et Allegro where the texture is predominantly melody-dominated homophony perfect cadences are frequently heard and modulations to related keys occur. Grovlez's D minor Sarabande is in a steady triple metre superblycontrasted by the fast Allegro composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance.

Par READE PAUL. Here, Paul Reade's music from the BBC film Jane Eyre has been arranged for solo melody instrument and Piano accompaniment. This well known music provides an excellent repertoire piece for the intermediate player, and a perfect piece for an end of term concert./ Répertoire / Hautbois et Piano

This title is taken from Dvorak. However. The models from which the songs are derived are clearly identifiable as are the composers from whose language they have been derived. The piece appears to be in one movement though it is in fact two with a coda. The first is French in style a sort of Waltz. It is quick and harks upon the likes of Françaix and where its idiom becomes more advanced Messaien. The other is Germanic a slow movement with echoes of German expressionism - perhaps Richard Strauss perhaps Mahler. The two movements are partly complete; the cod reconciles their differences and completes them. I see the piece as my own version of En blanc et noir.
