Or Organ-Born in Geneva of a jeweller father (and excellent flautist) and singer mother Marguerite Roesgen-Champion (1894-1976) was one of those rare women who reconciled family life (in 1926 she settled in Paris with her husband a philately merchant) with a professional activity devoted to music. Her abundant output graced all genres with a predilection for sacred pieces the art song the Piano and chamber music. Published respectively in 1950 and 1953 the two Nocturnes for Oboe and Piano (or Organ) have their place in the glorious tradition of French music from the between-the-wars period. The first Nocturne subtitled 'Noël' is dedicated to Pierre Bajeux(1899-1961) who taught the oboe class at the Paris Conservatoire as of 1941. Of classic ABA construction this piece as simple as it is expressive is in the form of a pastorale: here the gentle opening recitative unfolds its dreamy melancholic volutes of which the modal character would have appealed to Charles Koechlin. The second Nocturne presents subtle modulations that give it a refined elegance. In both cases this tastefully polished music invites us to stroll in an Arcadian landscape bathed in azure: 'There all is order and beauty / Luxury calm and voluptuousness'.

French oboist organist teacher and composer Charles Colin (1832-1881) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. Colin then went on to lead a successful musical career and his wealth of experience led to the composition of Famous Solos for Competitions which remain highly regarded to this day. Significantly the entire compilation of Famous Solos for Competitions was performed 1983 by Oboe students at the University of Washington. The first solo Colin's Opus 33 is challenging for the advanced oboist. The work addresses many technicalities including complex rhythms a range ofarticulation variations in performance directions dynamics and time signatures ornamentation and wide range among other aspects. For all aspiring advanced Oboe players Colin's Famous Solos for Competitions is an essential addition to the repertoire providing excellent audition and competition pieces.

Composed for Oboe and Piano accompaniment Piece V by César Franck is a melodious piece for intermediate players. The piece begins with a quiet introduction starting Andantino quasi allegretto. The main theme is then played twice with the Piano introducing each phrases followed by the Oboe repeating them. The piece ends in a really nice harmony between the Oboe and the Piano. There is no major difficulty in this really soft work which would be thoroughly enjoyed by the audience during a recital. César Franck (1822-1890) was a renowned musician (Organ and Piano) composer and professor bornin the United Kingdom of Netherland (Liège) who was based in Paris. Even though he only produced few compositions some of these pieces were very famous such as 'Symphony in D minor' and 'Prelude Chorale and Fugue' among others.

An Evening in the Village was composed in 1908 as no. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces. It has become one of Bartók's favorite works which the composer himself was fond of playing at recitals. As he explained in an American interview it was ''an original composition that is ... with themes of my own invention but ... the themes are in the style of the Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes. There are two themes. The first one is a parlando-rubato-rhythm and the second one is more in a dance-like rhythm. The second one is more or less the imitation of a peasant flute playing.'' Bartók also orchestrated the piece in 1931 as no. 1 of HungarianSketches. In 2015 we are launching a series entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer’s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications and publishing some further new transcriptions that fulfill in every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.

Elegia is a small piece for Oboe and Piano accompaniment by Nino Rota. Really lyrical its medium difficulty will enable intermediate players to execute it for a recital or for a contest. This lovely work is quite slow nostalgic at some points and ends up on a perfect harmony between the two instruments. Nino Rota (1911-1979) is an Italian composer and conductor particularly known for his works on film music. He also composed 5 ballets 10 orchestras as well as numerous music chamber works including a string concerto.

Exploiting the Oboe to its full potential Fantaisie Pastorale is an exciting and challenging addition to the advanced oboists' repertoire. From Lent to Allegro passages this piece by French composer Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) covers a huge variety of the Oboe's possibilities. The piece begins with an emotional characterised cadenza portraying the pastoral title. However the tempo gradually increases through the piece evoking the fantasy aspect climaxing with flourishing semiquavers and ending with a grand tonic cadence. Bozza's Fantaisie Pastorale for Oboe and Piano is not only symbolic but also includes exciting challenges making for an imperative performance piece in the Oboe repertoire.
