This is a freshly edited, updated and greatly improved edition.[bg_collapse view=link color=#4a4949 icon=arrow expand_text=Show More collapse_text=Show Less ]Gioacchino Rossini: Variations for Oboe and PianoRossini was still a student at the Liceo Filarmonico in Bologna when he wrote these Variations at the age of 18. Originally thought to have been written for Clarinet in C and Orchestra, recent scholarship, culminating in Heinz Holliger’s brilliant recording (Philips 9500 564), has provided many good reasons why the oboe is clearly the solo instrument. Not only does it ‘look like’ oboe music but the writing (within the oboe’s exact range at that time) ignores more than an octave of the clarinet’s potential range. Also, it is most unusual to find the solo wind instrument duplicated in the accompanying orchestral parts, thus providing unnecessary competition in timbre.Frédéric Chopin: Variations on a Theme by RossiniNo such ambiguity surrounds the origin of Chopin’s Variations on a Theme from Rossini’s opera La Cenerentola — orginally for flute. It is not definitely known for whom they were written, but they may have been either for his father (who played the flute), or for his close friend Matuszynski. They date from 1826-30 and here transposed from the original E major into D major for the oboe, provide a valuable addition to the oboist’s nineteenth century repertoire.[/bg_collapse]Arranged by Mark GoddardGrades 7–8Former Spartan Press Cat. Al Valles, for oboe and piano, is a work that has two distinct characteristics-it is a concert work but was composed as a work for a final examination piece. The work is dedicated to Vicent Montalt, who performed it for his final examination at the Mozarteum in Saltzburg, 2012.Al Valles begins with a Paganini-like cadenza for the oboe which introduces the main feature of the work- the alternation of legato with spiccato which is at times rapid and at other times lento. The cadenza is followed by an Allegro which begins with decisiveness by the piano. The two instruments establish a game of brief and very specific rhythmic figures with rapid chromatic descents, which in the piano are in octaves. A tranquil and mysterious passage ends with a sudden fortissimo. The oboe plays another cadenza, reminiscent of the first one, which is followed by a return of the Allegro. However, this time the music stops on a trill on F # in the high register of the oboe. The work concludes with a rapid coda which begins brilliantly in the piano with chromatic descending octaves.

White Light was commissioned by Fumiko Teramoto, oboist with the Musashino Grand Concert Band from Tokyo, Japan. The request was for a moderately slow piece, of intermediate difficulty, which included White in the title, as this is her lucky colour. Composer Philip Sparke decided to use this suggestion to write a piece that was bright and light in terms of harmony and colour, with much use of simple major and minor chords and an emphasis on pure and transparent timbres. He was also keen to capture the essence and history of the oboe as a solo instrument - the piece is pastoral in character and often almost baroque in style. Also available for oboe and concert band (AMP317-010/140).

The source of the present edition of the Oboe Concerto in A minor by Antonio Vivaldi is the Collected Works of Vivaldi, edited by Malipiero, published by Ricordi 1955. The title of the original score is Concerto in La minore per oboe, archi e cembalo the original setting: Oboe, Violini I-II, Viole, Violoncelli, Contrabassi and Cembalo. The arrangement for oboe and piano is kept in accurate conformity with the musical text of score, the continuo part - however - has been more freely adapted (of course within the possibilities of baroque style). The piano part contains the entire orchestral material in the Tutti-s, thus the soloist is not obliged to play all the Tutti parts. However, in Movement I and III the first and last Tutti may never be omitted by the performer.

It is difficult to determine exactly how many oboe concertos Antonio Vivaldi wrote. Although the present Concerto in F major was earlier seen as a secure work by Vivaldi (therefore it has the old RV-number 458), Vivaldi's authorship got even more disputable (in contrast to the C major Concerto RV 446 MR 2294). The doubts cannot even be dispelled by the existence of two sources from a large collection in Lund, Sweden. The Adagio central movement deserves our particular attention, as it was transmitted in different versions in the two sources. In this first edition for oboe and piano, the non-ornamented version is given first and followed by the version supplied by editor Sandro Caldini with ornaments typical of Vivaldi's time, which make this version of the Adagio particularly interesting for performers. In this first edition for oboe and piano, the non-ornamented version is given first and followed by the version supplied by editor Sandro Caldini with ornaments typical of Vivaldi's time.

Cyril Scott was an English composer, writer, and poet. He was essentially a late romantic composer, whose style was at the same time strongly influenced by impressionism. His harmony was notably exotic. Scott wrote around four hundred works, which include two mature symphonies, three operas, three Piano concertos, concertos for Violin, Cello, Oboe and Harpsichord, several overtures, four oratorios, as well as a mass of chamber music.
Scott composed his Concerto For Oboe & Orchestra in 1946. The three movements (Molto vigoroso - Andante,Pastorale:Tranquillo and Rondo giocoso: Allegronon troppo - cadenza - Con spirit) are published here with a Piano reduction of the orchestra accompaniment.
Complete performance time of the entire piece is approximately 20 minutes.

âOboe Concerto 1945, inspired by an American soldier, (oboist from Chicago)â â was what Richard Strauss noted down. And the oboist 0nd soldier with the American occupation John de Lancie had indeed asked Richard Strauss in May 1945 whether he had ever thought of writing an oboe concerto. Strauss answered in the negative, but soon got to work anyway. In October 1945, he had completed the score in Swiss exile; the premiere took place in Zurich in 1946. Not until 1948 did the first edition appear in London, presumably for the most part without the composer's involvement, for both the printed score and the orchestral parts exhibit numerous errors. Some of these have been known for a while, though others have only now been discovered by Hansjörg Schellenberger through his exact reconciliation of the autograph full score with the autograph particella. The world-class oboist thus presents this concerto for thefirst time in a Henle Urtext edition in both full score and piano reduction!

In 1901, Flor Alpaerts finished his music studies at the Flemish School of Music of Antwerp, which later became the Royal Flemish Conservatory. He studied harmony and composition with Jan Blockx. In 1903 he became professor at this institute and from 1934 until 1941 its director. For one season (1922-1923) he was also director of the Royal Flemish Opera House of Antwerp together with the bass Arthur Steurbaut. His fame, as a composer and a conductor, came shortly after World War I, when he succeeded Eduard Keurvels in 1919 as conductor of the concerts organized by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp and as artistic director of the Peter Benoit Fonds. He also conducted the choral group Arti Vocali. As a composer, Flor Alpaerts was the leading figure in the Flemish impressionistic movement, utilizing an impressionism that came closer to Richard Strauss and Ottorino Respighi than to Claude Debussy. A highlight in this direction was the symphonic poem Pallieter (1921-1924). With his suite James Ensor, inspired by four works of the Ostend painter, he created an expressionistic work. In his later compositions he turned to neo-classicism. Though mostly known for writing larger scale works during his life, this Concertstuk for oboe and piano, composed towards the end of his life came at a time when he unexpectedly because to compose chamber music. In addition to this work for oboe, he composed a solo piece for clarinet, as well as four string quartets during his final years.
