The Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition III/1/5. Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. “Incarnation” (1956), Bohuslav Martinu’s fourth piano concerto, follows an atypical two-movement structure. It was composed for Martinu’s friend Rudolf Firkušný, who played from a copy of the autograph until 1970, when the composition was first put into print. The next work, “Concerto in B flat major for Piano and Orchestra”, known under the name “Fantasia Concertante”, was to be Martinu’s very last concert work. The concerto in three movements, composed at the request of Swiss pianist Margrit Weber, is quite different from the previous work in terms of its compositional means. In this case, Martinu strongly influenced the edition of the work. The present volume of the Complete Edition of works by Bohuslav Martinu is based mainly on contemporary copies containing the composer’s own modifications. L'Ange musicien-Saint François D'Assise is an opera in 3 acts by Olivier Messiaen. This volume is part of the edition that includes the books with the full Orchestra scores as well as the explanations analysis and comments of each tableau. It is focused on the “Act II 5. L'Ange musicien” which describes the appearance of the “Musician Angel” to Saint Francis. This tableau is introduced by St Francis on his knees next to the cave. Three themes stand out in the opening of this tableau: the Decision the Joyce and the Calling. Some bird songs can be heard and the Angel appears in the light with a Viol and a bow. TheAngel Musician plays alongside some birds and leave St Francis fainting. He is soon joined by Brother Léon Brother Massée and Brother Bernard who try to help him. The last theme played is the Joyce one with some notes on the Viol while the tableau finishes with the three Brothers looking at the sky. Based on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi this opera is set in Italy and is composed divided as per below: Act I: 1. La croix 2. Les laudes 3. Le baiser au lépreux Act II 4. L’ange voyageur 5. L’ange musicien 6. Le prêche aux oiseaux Act II 7. Les stigmates 8. La mort et la nouvelle vie This opera was played at the Paris Opera in 1983. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French Organist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composers of his century. Inspired by Japanese music he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity its diatonic aspect its harmony with limited transposition its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsongs including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on rhythm colour and ornithology' in 7 volumes.

Nico Muhly's It Remains To Be Seen was written in 2006 for for full Orchestra and has a duration of approximately 11 minutes. Composers Note: It Remains to be Seen was written for the Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s 40th Anniversary Gala in July 2006. The piece begins with a chord identical to the one at the end of Stravinsky’s Firebird suite and proceeds into a series of charged nocturnal episodes. I wanted to treat the feeling of having just heard music and being expected to make one’s own – referencing the experience of leaving a BSO concert at the shed walking back to BUTI on a curvy back road arguing about music in pairs and threes and at the sign of bright headlights from behind reorganizing in single file as a car filled with happy concert-goers speeds by. The piece is a nine-minute navigation of an excited occasionally illuminated dark road filled with arguing cars fragments of remembered music and a constant propulsive pulse. Nico Muhly

Mon Concerto pour orchestre (2007) est une oeuvre de vingt minutes dans laquelle les différentes sections de l'orchestre, ainsi que différents solos et duos du sein de l'orchestre, sont mis en évidence que la musique se déploie. Le travail continue mon intérêt pour les formes à deux mouvement qui a commencé avec mon Concerto pour violoncelle (1991), et plus tard a été développé dans Sortilège (1996) et la Symphonie (Broken Consort) (2004). Dans ces oeuvres, et dans le Concerto pour orchestre, chaque mouvement est le même poids et de l'importance avec le second développement de matériel plus tôt et prendre de nouvelles directions.La forme en deux mouvements du Concerto pour orchestre vient d'une structure symphonique sonate, remodeler la forme en quatre mouvements traditionnels et en combinant cela avec les aspects de la forme sonate, une tradition qui remonte à Liszt, Schoenberg et Sibelius:1er mouvement (i) l'exposition d'idées - dramatique et soudaine (ii) scherzo et développement 1 - résolue2ème mouvement (iii) adagio - calme et tranquille (iv) le développement 2 avec récapitulation - intense et énergiqueLe Concerto pour orchestre a été commandée par le Musikalische Akademie des Nationaltheatre-Orchesters Mannheim avec le soutien de Die Landesbank Baden-Württemberg pour ses deux premières représentations le 31 Mars et 1er Avril 2008 réalisée par Friedemann Layer. Symphony In Yellow for Violin Cello and Piano by Britta Byström (2002). Programme Note Leggiero Dolce Energico Symphony in Yellow for Piano Trio is structured as a “miniature symphony” in three movements. The slow middle movement is surrounded by two faster ones. The title is taken from a poem by Oscar Wilde in which various images that are all characterized by something yellow float by: a yellow bus yellow hay yellow leaves… During the composition of the work I searched for a certain mood or color of sound something “yellow” that shouldremain unchanged while different musical events in the work’s structure took place. I perceived my challenge to be akin to an artist painting different subjects using only one color. Per Nørgård's Symphony No. 4 (1981) - Indischer Roosengaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee (Indian Rose Garden and Chinese Witch See). Programme Note: This symphony in two movements entitles “Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee” was inspired by Adolf Wölfli’s works - consisting of 20.000 pages of prose poetry and pictures -. An English translation of the title would read: “Symphony no. 4 - Indian Rose Garden and Chinese Witch See; after an idea by Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930) and dedicated to him.”  Wölfli was from 1895 (31 yearsold) until his death in 1930 confined to the mental hospital at Waldau near Bern Switzerland. Although he had no technical knowledge of music he considered himself to be a great composer and his paintings were almost always covered with long festoons of six-lined (!) music staffs. In 1912 Wölfli ordered paints and paper for a planned ´Musikbüchlein´ which was to be published in 1920 under the title “Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee”. (Wölfi uses his characteristic illustrative phonetic spellings with double vowels). The work was never completed and I took it upon myself to realize Wölfli’s idea according to his vision but of course within my own preconditions.  The double and suggestive title is typical of Wölfli´s polarized conception of the world which shifts between idyll and catastrophe. This polarization is of almost Chinese nature in that no idyll exists without catastrophic disturbances just as there is a black “spot” in the white “fish” and vice versa in the famous Yin/Yang symbol.  One might explain this idea with a quote by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun: “A prisoner on his tumbrel is wheeled to the scaffold.
