The traditional bolero is a moderately slow dance in triple meter which originated in late 18th century Spain. Since then it has spread to other countries and become transformed in the process. The Cuban bolero became a bit faster in tempo and duple in meter. In the U.S. it became a staple of competitive ballroom dancing, even faster and in 4/4 time. Maurice Ravel's Boléro for orchestra harkens back to the slower Spanish dance in three. Wood's Bolero by Mark Wood, on the other hand, focuses on the American version but maintains elements of the dance's origins and first iterations. Originally written for concert band (and commissioned by the U.S. Marine Band), Esprit de Corps is a fantasy-march that serves as a tribute to both the Marine Corps and the Marine Band. Composed immediately after the 1983 bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, the composer chose to forego an elegiac tribute in favor of a work that reflects the positive spirit of the Corps, full of energy and dynamism. Even the tempo marking, ?Tempo di Bourgeois,? reflects the dramatic and spirited conducting of Col. John R. Bourgeois, conductor of the Marine Band at the time of composition.

Forever Free composed at the request of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, André Raphel, Music Director, to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the State of West Virginia. Maestro Raphel suggested a work incorporating indigenous elements of the State's musical heritage, capturing in musical sound the robust spirit of West Virginia citizens and the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the year-long commemoration of the State's 150th anniversary, June 20, 2013. Forever Free is cast in one movement in three sections, with the title inspired by the state motto, “Montani semper liberi,” usually translated as “Mountaineers forever free.” Versions for both orchestra and wind band are available.
